The key is removing the red line. I'm sure you already know that, but for those that don't, the red line and a little margin MUST be removed. Many people think striper tastes like dirt (or cardboard) because it is not properly prepared. The flesh is firm which allows it to be cooked in a number of ways, including the grill! I think striper compares favorably with sea bass which is $16-$19 a pound around here.

It starts for me with a small storage room, turned fishing retreat, in the garage. Rods and reels are displayed upright on wall racks. On low shelving I store "reserves" in Plano boxes, organized by depth. Just above the shelving are peg boards for bags of soft plastics on one wall, a display hutch for hard baits, extra line and terminal tackle. Two hard tackleboxes contain line, terminal tackle, oil and tools that I carry in the truck on big trips My main bag is a XPS 3600 for everything I might want on a trip. Then finally, a small G. Loomis worm bag that I have converted to hold everything I will fish on a given day. Generally, this is all I take on a boat. Sometimes I take all my rods on a big trip, but I have a carry-on for the 6-8 I plan to use. Right now I only carry two on the Tennessee River. On lakes this winter I might carry 4, but the range of lures or techniques is more limited in the winter. So, starting from a fairly large base, the amount of stuff I actually take on the water is small. I also carry a man-bag which is stored out of the way. Rain gear, scale, sun glasses, lure retriever, sun tan lotion, etc. When I move to the back of the boat, things are neat and clean.

That's a pretty strong statement from a dyed-in-the-wool G. Loomis fan! p.s. I really hate braided line, but I fish it on my jig rods. I believe the line has improved my jig fishing significantly.

I currently have #12 Yo-Zuri Hybrid (purple smoke) spooled. If you want to use fluorocarbon, Tatsu or AbrazX #12 are my suggestions. Note: The Tatsu is expensive, but it's really KILLER if you don't care about the price.

Try some other lines and see what you think. Most lines are inexpensive, give these a try: P-Line, Izorline, Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Sunline Super Natural. I think you might like them all a little more than XL.

Hmm...You need a new jig. Try GMAN and NorthStar, I have NEVER had a bad hook.

Try it both ways and report your findings. One thing is for sure, no matter where you fish, pools hold fish. Sometimes ALL the smallmouth will school up and suspend. Maybe someone else can comment on what they use when they have this opportunity, but jigging spoons is a sure fire way to get bites!

Another "must-have" is the GYCB 6.5" Kut Tail. I read somewhere that this is THE most popular soft plastic in Japan. Anyone know if that's true?

The main characteristic is Moderate Action, meaning that the rod bends towards the middle.For most lures, medium power is what I recommend. The St. Croix Avid AVC70MM is a good example. However, if you spend a lot of time with deep divers (DD22), you will find a much stouter rod makes life easier. For this technique the Lamiglas SR705R is the perfect fit. This is my new favorite: Pinnacle DHC5-701CAMCB. The rod is built with a proprietary blank featuring a beautiful heavy epoxy finish.
