  1. My brother and I started out with black Creme Scoundrel worms in the later 1960s. From those, we went to Man's Jelly worms. The first curly tails I used were Mr. Twister. We always used 6" worms.
  2. Glad to hear your mom is doing better. And hoping you all have a good holiday.
  3. I made a post about this at one time. Bank fishing at night. There was a large wooded area behind me, and I kept hearing something coming through the woods and it sounded like it was getting closer. I turned on my headlight, grabbed my stuff and got out of there pretty quickly. I never knew what it was. I think my imagination got the best of me.
  4. Glad to hear this good news A-Jay. Hoping for the best for her moving forward also.
  5. A-Jay, I agree. And we have to remember that in many lakes there's so many small bass compared to huge ones it only makes it tougher to catch one. Its not like there's a giant hawg hanging around on every point.
  6. I spent most of a season trying to catch a huge bass. My PB was 8 lbs caught many years ago. I haven't beat my PB yet, but I'll never fully give up on my goal. A bunch of the guys here on BR were supportive and gave me good tips on the subject. Anyone who would tell you it's easy to catch a true trophy is full of bunk. It's not easy, and I don't think it ever was. I'll keep trying for a huge one, as well as just enjoying fishing period. One of these these days, I'll cast, and everything will fall into place. I'll beat my PB and catch a big bass. I.think.it will happen. I haven't given up hope.
  7. I used pork trailers years ago. I still have a couple of jars. At times, I thought pork was better than plastic. I used #11 pork frogs, U2 and U3 split tail trailers on jigs, spinnerbaits and some spoons.
  8. In my home state of Missouri, the cut off is 65 years old. I just turned 68, so I haven't needed a permit for three years now. I have a friend who is a conservation agent on my home lakes. He told me the two biggest violations are no permit, and trying to keep too many fish over legal limit. I've bought a permit every year since I was 16. I can't respect guys trying to sneak around and fish without a permit. To me, our fishing is a privilege, and not a given. Enjoy getting out there and catching some fish, but buy your permit first. I'll buy the required permit if I go trout fishing this winter, as I always have.
  9. North Central Missouri. We're at 44 degrees this morning, and we're supposed to have two mornings this week with temps of 38. My wife says it's cold. I don't mind it.
  10. Mine are Shimano Sienna spin reels. I bought two of them 8 years ago for crappie fishing. They're both still going strong. A good value for 29 bucks each.
  11. You can read the shoreline. Look at any points or cuts in the contour of the shoreline. These areas can sometimes tell you what's in deeper water nearby.
  12. Probably 25 years ago.My first bass on a jig and pig.
  13. Sorry for your loss. It's always a tough thing when we lose a devoted pet.
  14. All the things you mention, when put together can help folks catch bass. Location, bait choice, timing, etc. Putting it all together takes some time, practice, and learning.

I woke up this morning thinking about Catt. And, it still saddens me that he's gone. He was always here, and making good helpful comments on my post. Of course I never met him, but I always felt like I knew him, through this site. I can honestly say that I learned some things from him too. Time marches on, and we can never change what's happened. We lost one of the best guys when we lost him. I'm sure that many members feel the same way as I do. I'll always remember him in a good way, and think about him often.
  16. Best of luck on your surgery.
  17. A good book on light tackle fishing is On Slider Fishing by Charlie Brewer. Good info on the Slider, but these principals apply to other lures as well. It's still available from the Slider company for 6.95.
  18. Each year, the KC Chiefs have a new flag design. This year, the flags will be available Friday morning. The flags are available at area McDonalds for five dollars each. I usually get one, and pick up a couple of extra ones for family members who don't have time in the morning to stop and get one. Do other teams offer these flags?
  19. It sounds like you found a good structure spot. These spots will continue to hold fish.
  20. I've used a Heddon Zara Spook in the old black shore minnow color for years with good success.
  21. I used to have a couple of jars of pork rinds with me all the time. I liked the #11 pork frog, and the U2 and U3 twin tail trailers. I do think the pork rinds trailers caught better size bass overall. It seemed like it took me a long time to catch my first bass on a jig and pig. My first one came on a Arkie jig with #11 pork frog. I usually used a black jig, with black, brown, or blue pork frog.
  22. The first mower I ever used as a kid. Luckily my grandpa was good at keeping it sharp. Ours was a heavy old wooden handle one. It was a workout.
  23. Yes, I do at times. I've actually done better with a slow retrieve overall. Bass pro Jimmy Houston used a fast burning spinnerbait a lot years ago. His method was to burn them in creating a wake just under the surface.
  24. In all my years fishing, I think I got one bad spool of line. It was Trilene XL, 8lb test. I have heard of guys getting bad spools, so I do think it's possible. It's aggravating, but I think all we can do is respond with fresh line.
  25. My grandson Aiden works a part time job after school and on weekends. He likes to buy his own fishing tackle, with money he earns on his job. About 16 months ago he bought a Lews Speed Speed Spin reel, model G Spin, size 200. He liked it so much, he bought a second one for a spare. These are not high end reels and sell for around forty dollars each. Last weekend he spooled the unused reel and took it fishing. On the first bass he hooked, he felt a thump as the handle was turned. He brought it over, and we took the side cover off. We saw the problem right away. The main gear had chipped and there was about 1/4 inch of gear teeth broken. He was bummed, because the reel was out of warranty, plus he didn't have a sales receipt. He figured that it was lost. I told him to contact Lews customer service. He sent an e mail, and got a response the next morning. After taking some photos as Lews requested, and also had to send a pic with the model number scratched off, so this reel couldn't be used for a warranty again. Long story short, he got an email that said they're replacing his reel. In 10 to 14 business days, he'll have a new reel in the mailbox. Now he's happy.Lews stood by they're customer service, even when the reel was technically out of warranty. I'm not sure if other companies would have done this? I haven't had to request much warranty work on my own tackle, but, I'm giving Lews a high five for this, and helping Aiden with his reel.
