Sometimes you just have to let them go

Featured Replies

I was deployed to Iraq again in 2011/2012. In spring of 2021, my wife and I purchased a German shepherd pup and raised her and she has been the BEST pup anyone could ask for. She started having a nose bleed about 4 weeks ago and I actually googled dog sleep apnea mask because she was so stopped up. Bloodwork showed an infection, x-rays unremarkable. Wife took her back into the vet yesterday to see about follow-on care with a specialist. They advised us to go to this specialty vet clinic here in downtown HSV. We had planned on going this am. However, about 11:30 last night, she had a massive seizure, so we ran her to the emergency room vet. After discussions with them, we have all come to the conclusion it’s time to say goodbye. She’s had two more seizures this am already and going downhill quick. We are trying to schedule in home euthenasia, but it’s all booked up right now. Like I don’t understand? How do I schedule my euthenasia 2 weeks in advance when this just kinda started in the last 24 hrs. So, we’re gonna probably take her to our vet this afternoon and have it done there.

RIP Georgia Smira. You’ve been such a good pup to us all…

4:06 pm Oct 8, 2025 time of death…

I’m so sorry Kevin. We’ve all been there and it’s not easy. RIP Georgia. If you run into a walker hound named Homer or a couple of beagles named Alice and Rudy, play with them. They’re all three a blast. Please tell them that their pop still misses them dearly.

Thanks again all! Was a tough day for sure. Now my shelter dog is jumping all around the house looking for her sister. She’s gonna be so depressed when it finally hits her. We had 2 GSDs when we were in college back in the day and my F got hint and died. My M died of what the vet called a broken heart about a year later. Sudden heart attack, no warning…

@Smirak my condolences. I’m sure you have lots of good memories and those will never go away.

Sorry to hear this @Smirak, we just went thru it as well. At home euthanasia was also booked out here, luckily my wife was somehow able to pick up our old girl by herself (adrenaline) and get her to the vet when the time came.

as far as the other dogs in the house, my wife used a tactic from the equine industry. Seemed odd to me but it worked. She let the other dogs see and smell Cori after she passed, that way they wouldn’t be worried and looking for her. Apparently they do the same thing when they have to put a horse down , otherwise their buddies get anxious looking for them

So sorry to hear this.

It's easy to love a puppy and always hard to have to saygoodbye.. But it's the same type of love from beginning to end.  It was time.

GSDs are such a wonderful breed.  So loyal, committed, and full of life. You both were so fortunate to spend and share your lives together. When the time is right and we don't wait long, we honor each passing with at least one new puppy.  Not intended to be a replacement but does seem too help distract and balancece the pack.

Hope you can remember the good tmes, and there are always a bunch.

So sorry for your loss. The only bad thing about a dog is they don’t live long enough.

We had to let our Great Pyrenees go almost two months ago to the day and that wound is still fresh. While at work Tuesday, I saw a Great Pyrenees and had the chance to give her some loving. It took everything I had to keep from breaking down.

They all hold a special place in your soul and some take a piece of that soul with them when they go.

So sorry to hear that...We are facing that decision with Abby. Abby is beginning in her third year as a diabetic and her eyesight is pretty much gone at this point because of it. Compounded with the fact the she's at least 13 y/o - that we know of (she's a rescue) - her hip joints are failing her as well.

Tough times, so I feel for you.

So yesterday afternoon my family and I had to put down the last of our 3 rescue dogs. Steve came to us from German Shepherd Rescue (GSR) based in Chicago on January 10th 2019, I’ll never forget receiving the call asking if we would foster him and I immediately said yes while my wife had a bit of hesitation given (A) he was a male and (B) he was reported at 120 pounds and had some of the biggest canines we have ever seen on a dog. When we picked him up he was around 105 pounds and so sick with kennel cough he could barely stand and curled up as tight as he could on my minivan seat which he barely fit on trying to just hide, after almost a month of medication and a whole lot of love and reassurance he wound up bonding so tightly to my wife he very rarely let her out of his sight. In fact she had the flu for 4 days and he never left our bedroom except to eat and to go relieve himself. He woke up and ate breakfast and within 3 hours he lost both his breakfast and his ability to properly use his back legs which prompted our decision to have him put down 😢 As was said about finding in home euthanasia it unfortunately wasn’t an option especially on Christmas night. RIP my sweet boy.IMG_5501.jpeg.5b85da75b46116aa49b06018813a0493.jpegIMG_2625.jpeg.e1fe54e88857fc703b7ea6acb7f40ec4.jpegIMG_0649.jpeg.bb6deb4ab98b35a411380b4caccaa470.jpeg

@Eric 26

We were very sorry to hear about Steve.

Some dogs understand our hearts better than words ever could.

And Steve seems like he was one of them.

He stayed by your side, always gentle, always trying his best.

His beginning was hard, but from the day you found each other,

he was never alone again.

You shared a wonderful journey, but most of all,

you were there at the end, when he needed you more than any other moment in his life.

Holding him, loving him, just as he loved you.

Forever a good boy.

@Eric 26 - I am so sorry to hear about Steve brother! I know what you are going through. We had G auquamated (not sure if that’s even the right term for aquamation) and her remains are on the mantle in the living room. See her every time I turn the tv on. Steve will be missed for sure, but you’ll see him again across the rainbow bridge my friend!
