  1. I just checked the Coast Guard regs. Looks like I was wrong. For some reason I though a tow line was including in the safety equipment. That's why I have one in my boat. It's a good idea for everyone to keep one onboard.
  2. Isn't a tow line a safety requirement in most states?
  3. I agree, if you're able to get some practice time in, you'll have a pretty good idea what kind of weights will be coming in. With no practice, it's a crap shoot. It's a pretty good bet that 5 fish just over the minimum size limit isn't going to be doing you much good.
  4. You need to use mono or fluoro for backing. The braid will just keep slipping on the spool. I use enough backing so I only need about 50 yards of braid.
  5. Try the Mustad Fastach clips. Easy to swap lures and they're strong
  6. If you catch another one and you don't want to kill it, take a few scales to your local Fish and Game office. Their biologist should be able to tell you what it is
  7. Try a fluke or a weightless trick worm
  8. these are the two colors that work for me on the spotted bass here in Ca
  9. Same here, gave up on the FG because it slipped more often than not. The Alberto is a lot easier to tie
  10. this same video was posted on an air gun forum under a different name, different city. You guys have been trolled
  11. Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll send you a couple to try. Pick from 1/8oz, 1/4 oz or 3/8 oz
  12. The T Wing system makes casting heavier, thicker lines a lot easier. On smaller diameter lines you probably won't notice much difference.
  13. There are no weeds on Shasta so I don't have any problem but I'm not sure how weedless they are. I know they pick up slime. I would guess they aren't going to be that weedless as the blade is under the body of the swim bait and not over the hook like a spinnerbait.
  14. The Palomar know can be frustrating if it's not tied correctly. It sounds like it's cutting into itself when you cinch the knot down. Try another knot and see what happens
  15. I think the easiest/simplest solution is to buy a couple extra spools and load them with different line sizes
  16. I haven't thrown a buzz bait or spinnerbait since I started throwing underspins. This little cousin to the spinnerbait has caught lots of fish for me in almost every weather condition. Maybe the smaller profile isn't as intimidating, who knows?
  17. Get the trout, give them something they have never seen before. When the BASS Elites Series fished Clear Lake in Ca several years ago, lots of big fish were caught on trout swim baits. There are no trout in Clear Lake
  18. certain species of catfish feed on or near the bottom
  19. These two guys were fishing Lake Shasta on 9/17 when they noticed a commotion in the water near the bank. They motored over for a closer look and found a fish thrashing around with a 13" catfish in it's mouth. It was obvious to them that the bigger fish was struggling to get the catfish out of it's mouth. They jumped in the water and managed to get the catfish out of it's mouth. They called the local Fish and Wildlife office and talked to the fisheries biologist on what to do next. They were told to tie a rope to the fish and tow it around to help it breathe and recover. They towed it for awhile with the electric motor and it started to recover. They untied the fish and it swam away. This made the local tv news and Fish and Wildlife are calling them heroes for saving this historic fish. Here's a picture they took. The sturgeon was 8'2" long

  21. I haven't had much success with a spook. When i use a walking bait, I throwing an Evergreen SB. This is probably the easiest bait to walk. It also has a cupped mouth so it throws a lot of water. It's weight in the back so it sits in the water at an angle, increasing the hook up ratio. The weight lets you cast it a long way.
  22. First and foremost, be respectful of the guy's boat. Don't bang your lures of his outboard, windshields or boat. Some boat owners don't want guys stepping on the seats to get on the back deck. Ask about things he doesn't want you to do. I don't allow smoking in my boat. I don't need cigarette burns in the seats. 3 rods should be plenty and a small tackle bag should hold enough stuff for the day. Maybe bring a bigger lunch than normal and offer some to your host. If in doubt, ask questions. Be the guy the host would invite again.

you guys are the lucky ones. I've never seen a "Walmart shopper" in any of my visits to Walmart. Nothing that even comes close to comparing to what I've seen online.
  24. On a spinning outfit, theres no need for the leader to be so long that the knot goes through the guides. I tie the braid to fluoro, then put the knot at the second guide from the tip. I cut the leader at the reel. Learn how to lob cast, with the knot outside the guides. Once you learn, you won't be sacrificing any distance
