securing rods in a canoe/kayak
Seems like the holders where you can give the rod a twist to kind of lock in the handle would work - like where the handle slips into a groove. Might be a small pain removing the rods, maybe not though. May or may not hold them in a tip-over. You won't snag a rod on a back cast if you don't do an overhead cast while sitting, as long as your rods aren't too far behind you. I sometimes forget how long the rod is I'm casting with. I'm not snagging anything side casting. Only time vertical holders are a problem is under trees, maybe docks at CL. Not many lakes around that are high enough for trees to be a problem

how long does it take for all your Kayak stuff?
I drive down the ramp to launch unless it's a really short one. I doubt I'm slower than most boats. I can't haul a kayak far on a cart with my back and tendinitis. I have everything ready to go first, easy to grab out of my van. I plan ahead. Every ramp is different. At most ramps I back down one side, take the kayak off the roof and lay it in the dirt next to the ramp. I do the same with all my gear. Takes maybe 2 minutes. I will leave my rods too unless there are weirdos around. Just depends. Then I drive up and park, walk down and take my time installing everything out of the way of the boats. I don't know how long it takes, I don't rush if I'm out of the way. Once at the Delta when I had no room in the dirt I unloaded/launched the yak, used a rope to drag it around the other side of the dock out of the way. Took my gear and set it on the dock to the side out of the way as best as I could. Came back down and put it all together. It wasn't busy though. I've been in boats my whole life and I will never be the slowest guy at the ramp. I feel like my van is on and off the ramp in 2 minutes, max. When I load it back up I only tie it with one strap until I drive it off the ramp. I try to be quick. I'll make a video one day and see. I'd love a trailer. If I keep yakking I will get one. One cool thing about the Delta and some other places is that I can launch from anywhere (no ramp), especially if I have a friend with me. Some levees are not very high.

Pelican with a limp
Maybe fiberglass over it, or some other substance. Could cut some foam maybe to the general shape you want as a plug. If it were me I'd leave it alone.

Bass fishing
I think he came here for real advice. It's up to him to figure out if it's legal, including using live bait. A lot of people think my Dad's lake is private but it isn't. There's just one public launch. Ya a T-rig would probably be good, as well as a good ol' Wacky Rig. But that's generic advice. It'd be helpful to have more info about the lake or pond. Very helpful thread. I'm sure he'll come back for more advice any day now.

What lures do you always start with/go
Whatever is tied on unless I think something else will work better. and am not too lazy to change baits at that moment. It's an intricate system.

Fishing for a Mental State
I definitely do not need all my chores done for me to feel like I can fish. When I'm fishing I forget about everything else, and sometimes I fish to do just that. Fishing, or other enjoyment comes first for me in life, everything else is just crap I need to do so I can have fun again. I used to think work was more important....wait no that wasn't me, that was my Dad.

I'm going to work some exercise into my fishing.
I don't know if this was meant for me but I can't run really, doctor's orders, unless I want to risk hurting my back. I never liked it anyways. My step-brother does ultra-marathons or whatever they're called. He's doing a 200 miler soon in Tahoe. He was a raging drunk until he started that and I'm glad for him. Did my first decent hike since the ER yesterday with a light pack (12 pounds). 3.1 miles, maybe 700 feet elevation changes. Was really windy and kinda cold with a bit of "rain". Weird cuz it was 95 the day before. My back felt stronger than it has in a long time. I'm training for my first overnight backpack fishing trip. It's only 7 miles round trip (one night), but kinda steep. I can easily make the hike, but I want to make sure I can do it with 25 pounds or more, so getting all the practice in that I can. I have me meals pretty much figured out. Edit to add: I use the All Trails app to chart my progress. Free version. It's a good place to find trails too or get info on one you're interested. People review the trails, etc. Last night: The first step on this trail (counterclockwise) is uphill and is fairly steep for over 1/2 mile. Kicked my butt the first time, I was like "this is no way to start a hike!"

I'm going to work some exercise into my fishing.
I don't think fishing is usually much of a workout even on the banks. I hiked 5 miles along a local creek through bushes and rocks and didn't feel I had a "workout". It was spread out over several hours. My feet were sore, my legs a little tired, but it ain't the same as a good strenuous hike or other workout. I thought it was until I started hiking. Pedaling the yak could be a workout but I don't go that far really, and not without stopping to fish. I've never come home from fishing feeling like I do after a decent hike. Tired, yes. Once it cools down tonight I'm gonna do 3 miles up the small mountains near my house. I've only street-walked the last few weeks due to a strain from work. Tonight I'll put on the bag with a small amount of weight. I'm hiking so that I can hike and fish more remote locations.

I'm going to work some exercise into my fishing.
The last bit was kind of a joke. I fish with a camera on my head, two pink (salmon!) Lady President reels that I got at 66% discount, I rarely shave and my Mom dresses me funny. I don't care what most people think about me. But there's nothing wrong with additional pressure or encouragement. Most people quit diets and exercise. I've hit a trail a couple of times and thought to myself "just go home and relax", but I haven't. I've never put myself through any kind of physical training. Sometimes on the trail I'll pass someone and we encourage each other. I was looking tired once and someone said, "Keep it up!" and it felt like I got a boost, and I said it back. I also hope my hiking encourages others that i know that need it far worse than me.

Road-Tripping Bass trip?
I like the way you're thinking these days. If your wife is good with it then you should be planning already! Screw the gas, it will only get higher, and the truck will never have less miles on it than now Go! I can talk myself into anything this way! Plus everywhere you go will have cheaper gas than Cali, so it may not sting so bad. And if you can go now screw waiting for retirement. You may be too old by then, or dead! Your allowed 3 sponsors what are they
Nope, not JK, I think this is the best answer. I'm sure I could beat the pros with any equipment so show me the money.

I'm going to work some exercise into my fishing.
10% exercise and 90% diet is fine for getting lean. I personally want to increase how long I can fish and pedal the yak, how far I can hike to fish., and how far I can hike period. I'm strengthening. I want a strong core so my spine isn't doing all the work. So I'm more into the workout than I am the diet. It takes both though of course. I'm thinking more about what I should be eating too. Hiking is cool because it can be fun and beautiful, and you can't just get off the machine and sit on the couch. If you're 2 miles out, you're hiking back 2 miles whether you like it or not. I doubt I could use a machine indoors consistently. Too easy to quit. Maybe you could work a reward into the machine, like the refrigerator door won't open unless you burn 400 calories, or the TV shuts off if you stop pedaling. I told everyone I know about my new love for hiking and getting in shape, one reason was in case I wanted to quit...everyone would know!

Landing nets and crankbaits
I try (I say try) to support some of the fish's weight with my rod as it's in the net in an attempt to keep his head and the bait away from the netting. The net is more of a support for me to take most of the wight off when using trebles. Edit: I don't use a net very often.

Hydration
I have a 5 gallon jug just for refilling bottles for hiking and fishing. It's filtered tap water. I was refilling at a place like you (and I still would) but carrying the bottle too far is risky with my back and tendinitis. That's why I originally bought the small filter LOL not for backpacking

Confused fishing etiquette
I advise anyone with this attitude to visit the "Do You Carry While Fishing?" thread. I once talked a guy out of beating the crap out of another guy for doing just that from shore. I was in the small boat and the driver drove straight to shore and jumped out before the dude could grab his gear and get away. If anyone pulled that crap in my boat they'd be swimming.

Things that make you realize you should be slower to judge others.

Hydration
Electrolytes are good. I keep a few small bottles/thermos of water in a cooler, no ice in my yak. Also a large bottle frozen solid I can drink as it thaws. Sometimes I leave it in the sun. Backpacking on the banks - I have broken a water bottle before - plastic cap came off and I lost half my water in my pack. Left fishing early because I needed water. I like to use my own containers, plus less trash. Consider bringing a $15 water filter if the water you fish, or any near you is safe to drink that way. Backpackers use them all the time (Sawyer Squeeze is what I use). I don't buy bottles of water, I filter my own. What is so-called "Smart Water"...$2/ liter or $8/gallon? Smaaaaart!

It is not good
The other side: I had to have a tough talk with my Dad this weekend and it was difficult for me to do. I was on the other side of it I guess, being the confronter (he's fine). I went against his wishes (brought in family) and I know I was right to do so. That didn't make it much easier. And sometimes we aren't sure if we are 100% right. It was very very hard but I love him enough to risk him being upset at me or worse, which he was not. He was grateful. He and I had a great weekend after that. Sounds like you have a great family

San Francisco Bay Area weather is getting annoying.
It was windy at Tulloch this weekend too but I only dock fished at my Dad's (got a two pounder, lost a dink). It was also humid. Was pretty nasty. Overcast but no rain Fri - Sun.
