  1. My first foil lure. It came out okay. When the ice goes out I'll give it a cast or two. I've got a video of the making of it. I make everything but the hooks.
  2. News bias chart. The top center is the most middle of the road. https://my.lwv.org/sites/default/files/leagues/wysiwyg/[current-user%3Aog-user-node%3A1%3Atitle]/mediabiaschart_com2018.pdf Remember when: I can remember long ago... while watching Walter Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley on the evening news. One of them, I don't remember which network, tried a 2 minute segment at the end of each broadcast. Printed in big capital letters at the bottom of the screen said "COMMENTARY". It was an actual event when it happened. A selected reporter would give his viewpoint on a news item of that day. People talked about it for a long time, wondering if it was appropriate. They experimented with it for a long time then abandoned it. There was much debate over it's place in the news. Anyone remember when this happened? It was long ago.
  3. Move to Maine. I live on a lake in southern Maine and it has yet to freeze over. We used to have a solid Nov. - May winter. Now it's more like mid Jan to early April. We've lost three months of deep winter. Longer springs and falls. I dunno what's going on but it's getting worse. Last year no snow machines or ice shacks on the lake because the ice came to late and went out to early. it used to get 4 ft thick.
  4. We're getting diddlysquat up here in Maine. So far a disappointing winter. Still time though
  5. Frankenstein hard lure with feathers on the body experiment... Time to kill. I thought about making a hard bait that incorporated feathers into the body. It was a strange assembly but in the end I came out with something. The next one will be better. I don’t know if anyone else does this. The thing is made out of white pine, finished with feathers, an airbrush, and UV resin for the topcoats. As always I make everything except the hooks. (Ah… the birds made the feathers of course). I have a video of the build showing how it was done. No ads or requests in the video. Purely for fun.
  6. It's Christmas eve. I'm breaking out the good stuff. Diet Moxie. Maine's official state drink. No kidding. It's good stuff. Liquid tar with a touch of kerosene. Not actually just the taste. If you've never had any, you get the same facial reaction as someone who has straight whiskey for the first time. It's not good to drink this stuff alone though...
  7. Curado....two seasons now. It's been great. I grab it whenever I can.
  8. Where do fish come from? Is that the question? Well, there are two fish, okay. One is a boy and the other a girl... .and.... oh never mind.
  9. Lucky... we started with 300 bd. When the net and Netscape navigator arrived, the first browser, you'd click a page then go make a sandwich. I was on the govt. bulletin board systems at the time. At least those were ascii based and pretty fast to load. Wild west days for sure. Lots of fun, and lots of frustration. I had a book the size of a sears catalog just to get configured with an IP address. (Funny, some won't know what I mean by 'sears catalog' connotation. The Amazon of yesteryear.
  10. It's my name. It was going to be Deceiver but lately I've not used it much. It's a handle I stared with in 1977 when I began with computers and was on engineering bulletin boards (pre internet) and kept. It's a dimension hopping computer in a scifi book by Robert Heinlein. I've been using it ever since. I shy away from it a bit now as in later years as some of the public became a bit more... er.. weird?... I get schooled in religion by them because they think I'm satan. Funny, I find that back in the old days when everyone went to church on Sunday, no one cared. Anyway, I'll bet there aren't many who have an email address name that's 43 years old!
  11. Please be sure to come back and let us know what you decided to do!
  12. Go to a tackle store. Ask someone there what a popular lure is. They might give you some rapalla or something. Or ask your friend. Then wrap it in a box with a card and cash in $20 bills (if a grand it would be impressive looking) to outfit himself with 'some good stuff'. Doing the research, making the choices, and doing the window shopping is as much of a gift as buying the stuff for him. Of course, like all of us he will make some choices he will have second thoughts about later on. But, overall you'll give him the gift that will be something to do that he can sink his teeth into. Planning a hobby is about as much fun as doing the hobby.
  13. He lived a long event filled life doing what he wanted for most of it. He's left us with his legacy as a gift.
  14. 11 pm news says we got 9 inches here in Acton. I see one inch of slush on the ground outside my door. So disappointing.
  15. About 20 miles away from me. The only way it might not be standing is if it has a flat roof (sometimes) or near some big trees. Ya, it's coming down very wet. Same here Jim, Are you excited too?
  16. 12" or more possibly up to 16" here in Southern Maine. Maybe heavy stuff. A wide area of southern/central Maine expected to have power out. I've got a dual fuel generator for the pellet stove and TV/internet. I'd just as soon have a couple feet of the fluffy stuff but I'll take what I can get. 10hp blower primed and pointed out the garage. Ready for it... WooHoo!!! Been waiting for this for awhile.
  17. Jim, as you know I have two batteries in my cat and the same two in my camper. Just before winter I put a full charge on them and in the spring all of the batteries are still almost at full charge. I leave them in the boat/camper outside in cold temps. So, I don't know if a trickle charger is really necessary in the long run. I have two bank chargers in both the camper nad boat. Works good. I charge the boat from very used up to full a few times each week. Have a good Christmas Jim. Stay safe. The sh-t is about to hit the fan in the next several weeks.
  18. Love the changes, good eye for sure. graphic design is a real art. One thing I have noticed, and in different browsers and also on both my laptop and desktop is that when I first come to the site, the little world notification icon will flash a number if I have notifications. It literally flashes once and quickly. I have to be looking at it as the page loads or I'll miss it. The number doesn't stay visible. Not an issue at all as I always check it to see if anything is new, just thought I'd mention it. And, then again, maybe it's only me.
  19. I'm so glad to hear this. Every time I post the directions and talk about how I don't use my thumb I get comments like "learn to use your thumb like your supposed to", or "you're not fishing if you don't use a thumb", or "someday you'll need your thumb and won't know how to use it", or "that can't be true, I've tried it and it sucks". So, I pretty much stopped posting it and am just enjoying my DC.
  20. I don't dream of upgrading. I got hold of an old Solcat sailing catamaran, configured it with two electric motors, sunbrulla retractable canopy, swivel boat seats, cooler for storage, a console with electronics and a garmin and I'm happy. Of course it's stationed where I live so it doesn't travel on a trailer unless I'm taking it out/in for the season. Trolls great and is quiet. Not great on a windy day though. Electronic steering via a linear actuator. Two 100 amp agm batteries go all day. Strange I know, but I'd rather be on something I've made. Just thought I'd share it here.
  21. I don't know what wood is best. Almost all my lures are made of white pine or cedar. Just stuff around the shop. Cedar is a left over deck board. They are 1" thick so give me a good width to start from. A lot of people use balsam but I is not fun to work with. Ya, it sands super easy but it tears out and is fuzzy when you sand it. The other woods are still light and easy to work with but they are solid when you work with them.
  22. much appreciated...
  23. Well, ya know, my wife is pretty sexy. Sometimes it's better to stay home. But fishing is good too. Sexy wife or fishing. Sort of a tossup. ?
  24. Could be. I haven't fished crayfish here in Maine since I was a kid. We'd search for them under rocks. Unfortunately the population of them has literally disappeared. But, at that time I've run into a school of bass that would wait near the surface for the next one to be dropped and then fight over it. Been awhile though. Maybe their tastes have changed over time? ?
