What is the oldest fishing boat here?
About 15 years back a neighbor down the road needed some gelp cleaning out an old barn that was ready to fall down. No one had used the barn in over 30 years he said, was becomming an eyesore so time to clean it out and tear it down. After digging thru weeds and junk we found an old 12' jon boat turned upside down inside. I noticed the ribs stamped into the bottom were worn thru from dragging it, bottom was all gouged/ scraped up. He was going to scrap it but I thought I might use it for my pond if I could fix the leaks. Brought it home, and yep it leaked like a seive !! Made some temporary repairs and used it for years. Have no idea what brand, no hull number, no stamped anything on the hull. No stickers or branding of any sort. From what was left of the paint it was brown, but no idea if that were original or not. About 5-6 years back I went thru and repaired the leaks properly, replaced the transom wood, no foam in the boat anywhere, repainted the ole gal and it looks like new !! A few dings and bangs but doesnt leak a drop! Have no idea the age but do know it had been sitting for over 30 years and I have owned it for 17 years, how old before....who knows !?

Wiring Through Hull
Just something to consider...go to the local plumbing dept and look at the pvc pipe connectors. They make a flanged threaded coupler, put one outside screwed into another on the inside, you will have a smooth edged hole to feed your wires. They come in different diameters just like pipe does. Much less cost than anything that says " boat" on it !!

make shift handrail
Consider a self deploy and retrieve trolling motor, then you can remain seated where you are safe.

Boating safety idea.
In most cases speed is the real issue, when flying over the water at 40+ mph, hitting a small wave the wrong way can throw a person...I see many newer boaters claim they would never own a boat unless it went well over 40mph, in my 60 plus years of boating, haven't saw very many slow speed accidents other than some bumps and bruises, but high speed accidents....they rarely end well !!!

Well, finally crumbled ?
My 16' aluminum is rated for 90 hp, I would not feel safe with a 90 on the back!! I currently get 31 plus with a 40 horse merc, boat handles well, gets up on plane easy, adding another 50-75 lbs on the back with a 90 would overpower that light weight boat, or at least it would be easy to have it get away from the operator. Been into boats for over 60 years, never have I maxed out the hp rating on any of the 24 plus boats I have owned. Most always sell to first person that comes to look at it. Some place like Florida or Cailifornia where boats are traded all day everyday the max hp might be an issue, if a boat is seriously underpowered that will hurt the resale but going with a 60 vs a 75.....dont see any issue at all

My "New" Jon Boat Thread
Consider replacing the fuel lines under the motor hood, every one replaces the main fuel line and primer bulb, but those little gas lines inside also rot and fail, but are iften overlooked. Little pieces come off and cause blockages inside, cheap fix to prevent future issues.....

MORE POWER!!! Now THAT'S a jon boat!!!
Lucky he didn't rip the transom off, look close and watch it flex, glad he survived !!

Do You Have A Mercury Oil Inj 40 Hp -2 Stroke 4 Cyl?
I have found that using the seafoam improves overall performance, especially idling!! I use it in all my motorized toys. Never have an issue starting after a long winters nap. Many call it snake oil, but I find it to be a great product, I am on the water fishing while my neighbors are cleaning their fuel systems, because they wont use the " snake oil"…......

Show your ride...
Last summer had to downsize as I now fish by myself due to wifes health issues. Went from a 22' down to this 16' , great boat, excellent condition, really enjoying the easier launch and load compared to that 22'. Those were very popular when I was a young lad, easy to recognize that MFG hull...they had a great ride in chop...hope to see some pics of her on the water!!

Boat and equipment fail
Had a motorhome that developed some mold and smell from sitting to long. Found an auto detailer that worked for dealerships but took on side jobs. Best $250.00 I ever spent !!! My MH was a 30 footer so that was why the price was high, but they have acess to all the commercial products needed to do the job correctly. My MH looked like new when I got it back and the smell never returned in the 3 years after before we sold it. Pay the experts....you can spend big bucks in products and your labor is worth something !!

Any helpful tips for boating in winter months?
Wow....never had the guts to fish at below freezing temps...at least not from a boat!! I do fish in winter but it must be above freezing and no ice on the water to damage my boat. Great tips and ideas posted here, but in reality....I will wait until I get a nice 40 degree day! d**n that is plenty cold for me !!!!!!

It’s gonna be a long two months!
I have a 55# powerdrive and the spotlock is awesome!! I dont bother with an anchor anymore, to much trouble to get it out and in. My spotlock holds my heavy aluminum 16' deep V in 20 mph wind and healthy two foot waves. It runs all day trolling (8 hrs) on two group 31 agm batteries. I find the remote to be a great tool, never have to get out of my seat to alter the course when trolling.

Well, finally crumbled ?
Should only have to pay tax in the state it is titled... That 60 should do well, hopefully you have power trim as that along with the right prop can add 3 mph....I have a 16' Sylvan SC that carries 3 group 31 batteries plus a starter battery along with 15 gal tank. Boat is over 1000 lbs, I have a 40 hp Merc and get 31+ mph with the right trim out.

Removing Minn Kota Maxxum
Just using sheet metal screws would have never held it when the motor was in action. Glad you got it solved!!

Thanks, I got lucky, it is a garage queen, original owner was an older gent and he took really good care of everything, kept all his reciepts and records. Second owner also kept it garaged, he and his wife bought property in the UP of Mich, they needed money to build on their property, so I was at the right time and place. Had to drive 200 miles, but well worth the trip..

Need new seats for my boat? Recommendations?
Word to the wise....a lot depends on how big the users are ( weight wise). When you are getting seats for persons over 200 lbs then you need to spend bigger bucks for them to be comfortable and hold up...been there done that...you wont regret spending big bucks for really comfortable man size seats if you spend any time in them !!!

Bathroom on a boat
Build a polebarn then you can get whatever size boat she wants!! That is what I did, but wife never used the porta potty, so went back to the portable jug in our downsized boat.

Diy kayak transport
Just get a trailer, much easier, less hassle. Small kit trailers at Harbor Freight under 250.00, even less if you can find a used one.
