If You Only Had One Topwater...

Featured Replies

Luckycraft Sammy 85, Joe Thomas ms aurora shad. Absolute favorite topwater bait. Close second would be a megabass popx in ggbass color. Third would be a Stanley ribbit or black cavitron.

  • You could ask me a million, 1 lure, 1 rod, 1 reel, 1 place to fish, but narrowing down to only 1 topwater....are you crazy?   Jeff

Looking at thread brings up both trends and questions.

The trend is spook type walk the dog lures are ahead in numbers with 16, frogs 2nd with 9, pop-r type poppers with 5, buzzers 3rd with 4, small miscellaneous jump baits and chuggers with 4.

The question is; quality vs quantity thread indicated 5 to 1 preference to catch quality bass, how does this relate to the lures listed are nearly 5 to 1 quantity bass lures?

Don't want to hijack this thread, just an observation.

ive caught 4-8 pounders on buzz baits... also frogs are up there big bass caught in the pads.  which both give can give you quantity and quality..  i prefer quality but if Im catching quantity I wont complain...

If you could only use one topwater bait for the next year which one would it be?

I use a Booyeah Pad Crasher Jr. as my go to topwater and have decent luck but I was curious what everyone else's go to is...

I used the "Pad Crasher" this year inplace of the Spro Frog brand that I had used for many years. The Booyah worked just as well, but was A LOT more durable. I would choose it if I could use only one topwater bait.

Cavitron 1/4 oz. buzz bait in black, or maybe a Moreau field mouse, come to think about it, I use a Yum houdini shad most of the time. Very hard to choose just one on top , like them all brother.

Which ones are considered quality?

sammy 100 in skeets magic has been good to me. (smallies) I like the chartruese belly on it.

Death Dealer Bart

Heddon Baby Torpedo in the clear color. So versatile, can be popped, walked, or fished like a buzz bait.

Pad Crasher Jr in Cricket Frog for both numbers and quality, open water and slop and walls and around timber.

Hollow body frog, I don't care what brand, they all work fine.

Megabass x-pod. Simply the most versatile topwater bait I have used.

Lucky Craft Sammy 115 in MS Am. Shad.  Preferable the one in my box with the missing eye, and all the scales worn off.

If you are fishing a big bass tournament, for example, the lure of choice would be designed to catch larger bass, not a general use lure designed to catch average size bass, unless you had experience otherwise.

I have caught DD bass on wooden Lunker Punkers, this is a big bass lure. Buzz baits have caught more big bass than the other top water baits listed. All top water lures, like other lures, will catch the occasion quality bass, at the right place and time. I don't consider frogs, spooks or poppers big bas lures, they catch a lot of 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 lb bass. Didn't see any big wake baits like a Slammer for example.

I use many of those previously mentioned, but I love to fish a Jitterbug.

heddon baby torpedo.
