Update from my last post about figuring out a pattern. I revisited the same spot that produced my last few fish on Friday evening but this was after a rain and on an overcast day. I had 1 maybe 2 bites lost one and missed the other.

Revisited today for maybe 30 minutes. We had a huge cold front move through the past day and some cold rain/snow. Water was up a couple feet but the sun was shining bright plus I wanted to test my new setup. So I tied on a Red Craw Lunker Hunt lipless crank and made a few casts and almost immediately hooked into this nice bass. Lost another huge fish which I’m pretty sure I’m snagging carp when that happens, could be big bass but whatever I am hooking is nearly pulling the rod from my hands.

Anyway caught another slightly smaller bass that I didn’t picture but the key seems to be the lipless just over the grass on a sunny relatively calm day.

The fish are still a little cold and don’t look to be quite into pre spawn yet so the best fishing is yet to come!!

This will be my first real season going hard after the bass so I am pumped!

Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

Cold, but at least it was not windy. So I did some more bank banging with a pocketful of jerkbaits.

Caught about a dozen small bass...

and some dinner.

This is one of my more interesting catches, and certainly one of the more ambitious bass that I caught.  Still hungry enough to CRUSH my jerkbait.

That's a hammer!

Hit a new-to-me pond today that’s more than a little out of my way, but I found decent incentive to go back real soon.

Went out to bank fish tonight again with my buddy Mike. I nailed some big females, including a hefty 6-1/2, with a Booyah Flex 2 squarebill wiggled over the eelgrass with #17 AbrazX. Man, that little crank is a good bait! Pretty good hooks, too. Mike caught a bunch as well, on a jig.

Finally got out again after a couple months of life and weather getting in the way. Caught my PB smallmouth (4 pounds, don't laugh) and a few other solid fish. Great being back out there again.

Got out today for about 3.5 hrs. In some brutal wind. Managed 1 on a bladed jig and 3 on a jig with this one weighing in at 3-13. All were up shallow on little sticks and branches.

The weather's been nuts here. Woke up to 26° the other day. 33° on another. I could really feel the temperature drop in the water when wading. NW winds helped to really chill it compared to last week. There was a 67 degree day mixed in. We'll see high 50s this weekend. It's been up and down.

I hit my spot at lunch time today only to be pelted by ice pellets. Not quite hail or sleet. Then it started raining. No hits. No misses. Slid back there for a quick one before dinner and got to work. It was still raining. The jerk bait bite has fallen off for some reason. I threw them anyway, fruitlessly.  BUT! The Dark Sleeper to the rescue! This bait has been ? lately. I'm not sure what they think it is. A baby carp? Who knows? All I know is they like it alot.

I can't get bit on anything Keitech in this place no matter how I fish it, so go figure. The Sleeper is like a short, bulky Swing Impact. Maybe it's the Sleeper's profile?  Anyhow, with these results lately, I now have an excuse to buy every shade and size of Dark Sleeper known to god, man, and vegetable. Weeeeeee!

Only a 16"er, but she was a scrapper I tell ya.

First time bass fishing this local reservoir in over 3.5 years. Spent the afternoon checking out some old holes and was happy to see fish still using them. Here’s a couple of them. Good structure stays good, year after year ?

One dink in five hours on Thursday, from the yak. Brutal.

~Eight more in about an hour and a half yesterday, from the bank.

Caught nothing but a 9 foot, 8” diameter log tha was lodged in the mud. Pulled it in maybe 100’ until my worm finally broke free and almost hit me in the eye. Not bad for 20 lb braid.

Got to test out a 1/4oz dark sleeper. Way better than the bootlegs I ordered from China.

Not a single bite.

Woke this guy up:

I've been having pretty good luck with crankbaits on flats and up in the shallows.  I caught the first jig bass of 2019 yesterday.

we caught over 30 spots again today amid the low clouds and a light SE breeze. it was a shame we had to leave.

My last couple of trips out fishing were more of a sea lion watching expedition than anything else. Watching the pinnipeds searching out and feeding on prespawn bass throughout the delta is rather disheartening. So with that said, I felt very fortunate to get this 4.7lber to eat a 7” senko.
