Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

I just woke up to the sound of deck furniture getting thrown around by high winds. Took a look outside to find horizontal snow flurries whipping past the street lights! Makes me doubly happy I was able to sneak in a 45 minute session right after work and right before babysitting our brand new grandaughter. The Shadow Rap 11 in perch does it again! 90% of my catches since December have come on this bait. This cutie came on the last, last cast. I had about 15 last casts before that one!

Always nice to end the day just after catching one.

Nice catch! Those last casts tend to linger on for a while at times. Nice that you got one on the last, last cast!

So nice being back out on the boat again after this winter. Local lake is clearing from all this rain, and surface temps up to 47 degrees. Threw "Ned" around a bit yesterday and managed about 15 fish in really nice conditions to be on the water in (sunny, no wind, mid 50s)...just not the greatest for catching - Lol. We made do.

Congratulations @HazeRVA on your new Personal Best! Well done sir!

Gave the ned rig a try for the first time today. I guess the fish are still a lot colder than I thought, in a small pond only managed one fish but I had to drop the ned rig right in front of his nose.

Came on a green pumpkin finesse TRD.

They are slowly getting bigger!

Late on Friday night one of my wading buddys asked to link up on Saturday after work. Late on Saturday afternoon I got a text from him :"No fishing for me today". We had 25-30 mph NW winds pounding in all day.  The "real feel" was 28°. The spot we were going to hit is usually a wind tunnel on breezy days, so I can't blame him. But I had a truck full of gear... so I hit a bank that I've been doing well at. Unfortunately it's on the SE side of the lake. It was just about impossible to thrown anything with the wind blasting straight at me. Luckily I had my frog rod in the truck. Tied on a 1/2 oz Terminator spinner bait and went to work. It cut the wind pretty good. I bombed it out into a spot that was wall to wall pads last season. It's just random stalks at this point. Slow rolled it just above the bottom and let it clip whatever was in the way. Then BAM, fish on. This guy really wanted it. The hit and run was violent. I thought it might be a monster at first, but it was just a nice one for a day that I thought was going to be a bust for sure. The water is still quite cold at 39° degrees. But the last few have had fat bellies, so they're getting ready for the spawn regardless. I left with frozen hands and a frozen smile.

Earlier this year I purchased some sierbert spinnerbaits based on some of the reviews I have seen on this form amd so far they are workong out very well. Yesterday a rough day of fishing was salvaged by a black and blue double colorado spinnerbait.. She was 4 lbs 15oz and absolutely smashed it.

Last Thursday my friend asked me to fish Candlewood with him on Sunday on his totally jammin' bass boat! But, my brother had already asked me the night before if I wanted to get blown around on the jon boat on a very skunky lake on the same day. Oh, the dilema! Skunk Lake it was. This lake is tough, as anyone who fishes it will tell you. A huge, feature-less, bowl. Zero cover. Zero lillies, so no lingering stalks from last season. But it has some bottom contour and good fish if you can find 'em. Some dude got an 8lb Largemouth last fall. Not too shabby for the northeast. But I had it in my head that we should go all out for smallmouth. So we did. The wind was blowing so hard that the battery was merc'd in about 2 1/2 hours. Paddling against a headwind in a jon boat through rollers for a mile is invigorating. Avoid it if you can! In the end we found 'em. No whoppers, but the fight was still rediculous. Smallies really, really, really, don't want to be caught! Good times.

Got out for a little while before dark so I stayed close to home ( The North end of my lake ) Caught 8 fish , all on Zoom super flukes ,  in watermelon slice. Had several violent blowups as it hit the water, or as I pulled the fluke through grass or brush.

The biggest was 3.6. ( First pic.)20190328_195602-966x1288.jpg20190328_190150-606x808.jpg20190328_195032-966x1288.jpg

Been a while.

Love me some bluebird skies. Cold, and windy too.

Ypr3g91.jpg

Fish were biting though.

Too windy to take the kayak out, I walked the banks for ~3 hours and caught maybe 15, not counting quick releases.

One rod, one reel, and two jerkbaits. This one was the largest.

First tournament of 2019 was humbling.  Believe I had the winning bites but didn't have the winning execution.

Water temp started at 46 and raised to 49 by the end of the day.  The lake was stained and had less then 6" of visibility.  The wind went from dead calm to 20+ gust by the end.  This all lead to only 2 of the 37 boats bringing in a full bag.

Didn't have confidence is many spots other then a 20 yard section so the game plan was to spend the majority of the morning cycling different baits there.  Swimming a trd 2-3 ft and killing it for 10 seconds brought most of the strikes in practice and that didn't change in the first pass of the morning.  The first 10 cast produced the lunker of the tournament, a 14" short, and snapping off on a hookset (Mistake 1# should have retied and may have been a little aggressive on the hookset).  Was unprepared and had some livewell issues which allowed the boat to float over the small section (Mistake #2 as I believe there were more active fish but the noise shut them down).  Mistake #3 came a hour later after hooking a solid 3lber and having the net tangled up with a crankbait,  tried to flip it and the hook popped right out.

There were many more mistakes throughout the day but you get the jive,  being prepared goes a long way.

This beautiful lady went 5lbs 10oz.  I'll be ready for better execution this Saturday.
