Super User Team9nine Posted August 1, 2017 Super User Posted August 1, 2017 Lots of action chasing crappie this afternoon. Kept a few for a meal, then enjoyed just swinging on them the rest of the afternoon. Â Â Â 12 Quote
Ksam1234 Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 I finally got my first pike today!! Wasn't rly sure how to get a good pic so don't mind the first time awkwardness hah 13 Quote
UPSmallie Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 It's been a trying few weeks for me fishing for Atlantics. Â I've hooked into 4 solo fishing. Â The first two have snapped me off, one of which I fought for literally 45 minutes before my mainline gave-out. Â The third used my clamp line as leverage to pop loose. Â The fourth wasn't so lucky. Â I've been gradually improving my setup and I believe it is safe to say I have found the 'magic fly' thanks to trying multiple nymph patterns via Orvis. Â Picture looks a little funky, but was happy to land this 18 incher for a tasty shore lunch. Â Â 12 Quote
UPSmallie Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 Had a fantastic day fishing the local bay after work today.  It was too windy to troll for smallmouth, so I anchored deep into the weedy inside bends and fan casted a Rapala X-Rap in perch color for pike.  It took a little bit of moving around, but I was finally able to hook up with this 25 incher.  Using 10 lb trilene, he took me for a 7 minute joyride.  I thought he might be a muskie since I'm used to fishing heavier line, but I couldn't complain.  Also proceeded to land three 23 inch pike on the same bait, with two striking just feet from the boat!  It was incredible.  Rapala jaw-grippers came in handy here.  Filleted the only legal one and gave it to a coworker.  Inside its stomach was a 5 inch perch.  I think the Rapala matched the hatch well.  Fish On  8 Quote

IndianaFinesse Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 No pics of it, but i managed to land a 44.5 inch flathead on a medium-lite rod and an eight pound leader a couple weeks back. Â Caught her on a 1/8 ounce shaky head with a trick worm, fishing slightly offshore on a brushpile in 12 feet of water. Â Took me into the brush at first, bit somehow untangled itself and went out into open water. Â Followed her on the trolling motor, until the cat finally got tired about fifteen minutes later. Â My scale only goes to 25 pounds, but we estimated the 44.5 inch flathead to be in the 45 pound range. 6 Quote
UPSmallie Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Fishing has been phenomenal for me this past week.  Lots of nice fish casting.  Pike came on Rapala Husky Jerk Perch, Atlantic came on a fly, and the walleye was a big surprise for me using an olive X-Rap.  Thought it was a sub legal pike until it surfaced.  Didn't even bring a net since I figured I'd just be pike fishing.  Thankful that it stayed on long enough for me to land with fish grips.  There is great fishing to be had close by.  The local bay where the pike and walleye came from is a 7 minute trip and the powerhouse where the Atlantic came from is a 30 minute boat ride from my house.  Hoping to catch a few more nice ones before school picks up again.  Fish On    14 Quote

wet_dream Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Launched at 4:30am with one of my buddies. He's been having some success at a couple spots and we wanted to make sure we got there before first light.  The water was nice and flat, and it was very peaceful on the water. It was a welcomed change from the summer boat traffic we normally have to contend with during the day. I trolled an SP minnow on the way to the sod banks we'd be working to start the morning. We were hoping to get on a topwater bite. Sunrise pics never get old.  A lot of bait busting on the surface. We were optimistic. The conditions were aligning for a fishy day. But after a few casts we realized the fish feeding on the bait were not our target species.  Little snapper bluefish all over the place. These are aggressive fish. Caught a bunch of these guys, all about the same size, and was careful in taking this one picture after this one finally calmed down after a minute of thrashing. I did not want a treble hook in my finger.  We made a move, hoping to get away from these yellow-eyed monsters and was finally able to land our target species.  Not a big fish by any means but I was ecstatic to land one this morning. Had a couple more blowups on my lure but I was only able to hook up with this one fish. I cannot wait for the fall run when there will be much larger stripers in our waters. I considered this productive 4 hours on the water. Learned a few things and marked a couple more spots for future trips.  Got some footage on my GoPro, maybe I'll post it if I ever get around to editing it.   8 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 21, 2017 Super User Posted August 21, 2017 Â While Kayak fishing this weekend I caught a 3 plus pound Channel Catfish. Quite a surprise as I was fishing a Ned Rig. You can see it in the corner of his mouth in the top pic. 7 Quote
UPSmallie Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Managed to get the afternoon off so I went to see if the eclipse would affect the Atlantic Salmon fishing.  Usually the middle of the afternoon is not a great time to target these fish, but today was the exception it seemed.  Ended up 1/4 with two fly break-offs on 10 lb test.  Very difficult to land.  Got two hookups right as the eclipse was taking place.  The other two came about an hour after it had finished.  The 4 lber I was able to land was a brightly colored male with some light red speckles.  Hard to tell from the picture though.  It looks like they are starting to shift towards their November spawn as the females and males are pretty easy to tell apart now.  I'm hoping the Kings start moving in with the Atlantics.  Would love to fight one, even if for only a few seconds.  Fish On  9 Quote

Dorado Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Using live Bluegills 2 feet under a float is my favorite way to catch channels! Last night........  By the way, Shimano OC Baitrunner is absolutely perfect for free lining livebait. One crank of the reel and you engage and lock for a fish on! Circle hooks prevent gut hooking for a nice catch-and-release.   5 Quote

There are no crappies in this pond so that's why I originally eliminated that species. However, the canals sometimes introduce nonstocked species in ponds which explains why a random flathead could end up in a neighborhood pond. Either way, it's catfish bait to me Quote

Once things cool down a little I might try and swing out your way "for old times' sake." Not looking like I'll have a new lot anytime soon, plus they're going to pull the lake down 10' next year really early. 1 Quote

It still looks like your doing really good rock hopping, far better than it's been out here.  Last two weed treatments caused major fish kills, and ruined fishing for about a week each.  I think they might be using a different chemical, I've never seen them react this way before.  Only taking ~10 pounds to win the tournaments.  You're always welcome to run my boat, name the time and day and I will be there.  Really learned a lot watching the way you approached offshore fishing last time, made my whole summer.  BTW, is it set in stone that the lake will be drained ten feet down next year?  Is the lake still going to stay open for fishing?  I hadn't heard anything about that till now. 1 Quote

Not sure if it's the same where Dorado is though.  My eclipse day fishing was pretty awful, but I did catch a monster sunfish, a bluegill/green sunfish hybrid I believe, which are pretty common here. 10.5" long whatever it was. 6 Quote

Thanks for chiming in and nice hybrid! I live in Phoenix and it is lawful to use live bait in community waters, except Tucson down south  FWIW. Plus, there is a bag limit of 10 for sunfish at lakes with no minimum size. AZ is pretty lax compared to other states. Quote
