Favorite square bill crankbait

Featured Replies

I was going to load up on some square bill cranks in preparation for hitting the spawn in KY and was wondering what you guys recommend. I was going to get some KVDs and also was going to get some LC RC and noticed they don't make them anymore. Thanks

I've pretty much have tried them all and always come back to the Bomber square A. It's only I believe 2 inches long but weighs 3/8 of an ounce. I get numbers and size plus at $3.99 I'm not afraid to throw it in wood/timber, rock or cover because that's where the fish are. Now it should be noted that I do upgrade to sure set hooks but they've never let me down.

depends on if you want a silent or a rattling squarebill, personally i love the jackall aska sr70

I loved the Storm Arashi squarebill in both rattling and silent but unfortunately there discontinued now! I’m very interested in this thread as I’m trying to find a new Square bill currently

Tackle Warehouse has the silent versions, if that’s what you’re looking for.

SPRO Little John in Cell Mate.  My favorite CB of all time.  I never leave home without it.

The SK KVD's are my go-to square bills.

They work for me year round, from 50 degree water in early spring, right through summer, and into late fall until the water temps fall back into the mid-low 40's.

The come through grass better than any other square bill I have ever tried.

I mostly use the 1.5 + 2.5, don't care for the 1.0. It catches too many rock bass, and is difficult to cast on my preferred square bill throwing gear. I have never used the large ones.

I keep it simple with colors, usually blue gill, orange belly craw, chart./black back, and chart. sexy shad.

Hooks get changed out of the package. #4 Mustad KVD elite triple grips on the 1.5, the same hook in a #2 on the 2.5

Spro Little Johns for cold or pressured water, and KVD 1.5s for warmer water covers my needs. That little Spro crank really catches em, and they come with some of the best stock hooks I've seen.

I have been using the Berkley Pitbull a lot lately.  Their Gilly color is awesome!

I am going to check out those Booyah Flex now!!!

The new Rapala BX Brat is a good one. Made of balsa wood which gives it a tight wobble and the lip is pointed at the tip which helps it deflect even better.

Norman Fat Boy (Redear pattern)

I have several of all kinds but always trust my KVD 1.5’s

KVD 1.5's. Not that there aren't others that are good, but it's the one I have confidence in.

KVD 1.0/1.5/2.5 for me too.  Everyone carries them and when they're on sale I can buy them in bunches where they're cheap enough to throw anywhere and not stress if I lose some to snags.

Hands down a Bomber square A.

I think the 6th sense crush is about as good of a plastic squarebill as any. Great paint and hardware.

If you want to try a balsa bait check the black label or WEC.

For me I have 3 I trust and others yet to make it in the rotation.

Xcalibur XCS 200

Bandit 100

KVD 1.0

The KVD 1.5 and 2.5 and SK series 1 have only caught a handful of fish for me despite me throwing them a lot.

Was interesting when we were at a seminar Seth Feider mentioned this bait too and really liked it. I think it was doomed because nobody cold rap their head around Rapala making a great plastic crank.

I think its Rapala by name but a Storm design . Look at the rear  hook placement . The only other bait I know of like that is the Wiggle Wart .

Look at the storm big bass line of baits, I have a few of the DDs and they look identical to the crankin rap series.

Ijust looked and  they are exactly the same .

I really like the 5/8 oz. Bandit Squarebill but apparently, it's been discontinued.

The Norman Fat Boy is another favorite, along with Strike King KVD series and Rapala DT Fat.

The Bass Pro Shops XPS squarebills are also rgeat baits, and at $3.99 ea., are a bargain.

I got to try out the BooYah Flex II baits last year.  While they didn't blow me away as something new or different, they caught.  I found I had them tied on my square bill/trap rod more than anything else last prespawn.  So, I guess they became my favorite without realizing it.  I'll be digging around this week, looking for them.
