Looking for the *perfect* jig

Featured Replies

So I'm hoping you folks can help me out here. I'm looking for do-all jig. I know I know... arky! But it's not that simple. I have a lot of wood and a lot of rocky bottom on my reservoir. The problem is from now until November there's some amount of weeds growth literally everywhere, even if its only a little.

A football jig comes up weed wrapped literally every time. So that's out. I have some and use them for dragging sand and rock but not for flipping.

I tried a missile baits Ike flipout jig. it was ok at everything but it liked to get hung up frequently in brush piles. Less so in rocks but it still got bound up sometimes.

Swim jigs fished like a flipping jig work, come through grass amazing but snagged often on rock and didn't like brush piles.

My favorite jigs to date are the Jewel J-lock flipping jigs that i buy from tackle supply depot. They do grass ok, wood amazingly well, but I still get boxed up sometimes in old submerged rock walls.

Any recommendations for jigs that might fare a little better? I was looking at the siebert ptich'n jigs. Maybe I'll get some to try but I'm open to suggestions.

Rig a creature bait t-rig, 4/0, punch skirt, with pegged round tungsten weight.

Go through grass and round weight will keep from getting hung in the rocks

I use a 6th Sense Divine Hybrid jig for everything...

Well I use the 6th Sense Divine Swim jig for swim jig applications.

Those are the only two types I carry and couldn't be happier.

Terry Oldham’s Eye-Max ?

Call Seiberts Outdoors

Yes! I'm all in on the siebert brush jig. Grid iron version if you use braid, standard version if not. I throw them at everything without any major issue. They aren't perfect, but they are as close to it as I have found. Spend the extra change to get them wire tied.

I've decided I'm going to get some siebert jigs to try, support the forum sponsor and all that. If they don't work for me I'll branch out some more.

I think I've figured out the nomenclature for the siebert jigs... the Mata is the thick hybrid skirt. All the other variants use different hooks. So the mustad hook is a lighter gauge I'm guessing and the owner round bend is a heavier gauge based on the braid comment above. I don't fish braid but I do fish heavy hybrid with a heavy rod. Hmm.

Maybe I'll grab a couple this payday to try out. Worst case I don't like them, I can always try other ones or the Oldham jigs.

Hmm. There is the milliken coupon code too. I guess I'm ordering a bunch of different jigs and I'll report back how they compare.

The Berkley power jig was the perfect jig IMO.  I was really sad when they discontinued it.  I havent seen a jig made since with the rattle built into the head.  And the powerbait skirt was the shizz as well.

A decision has been made. I ordered a total of 6 brush jigs from Siebert Outdoors in various configurations. Since my salt water fishing aspirations have been put on hold for a couple weeks (work sucks) I might as well order some toys from 6th sense lures too. That divine jig looms juicy.

I definitely got a few to try, I'll add those to the list!

I've had good experiences with the siebert outdoors dredge dock rocker jig, fished it in rocks, weeds, pitching/flipping docks and cover, definitely worth checking out

The "perfect jig" is the one that catches bass on any given day. I've probably caught most on Strike King's Tour Grade swim jig or Booyah's Swim'n'jig with the rattle, simply because I can buy them in stores easily and they work. I also like the heavy cover swim jigs with a heavier weed guard, which can serve as grass jigs.

The next jigs I buy will be from Talon. I've heard good things.

The *perfect* jig does not exist.

You are better off looking for a jig that has the design Catt posted as it will do 90% of what you want. Jigs with the hook eye at the top of the nose end are all terrian, go through grass, wood and some types of rocks. Rock tend have crevices for the line to get inbetween and the jig head follows the line wedging it between a rock and a hard place. A football style head doesn't wedge inbetween rocks as easily but flips over wood snagging the hook and plows through grass covering it.

Keep in mind the most important feature any jig has is the hook and hooks are not equal.

You are the common denominator when it comes to preventing snagging a jig.

I designed what I believe is the perfect jig for my style of fishing in'71 and it works for me in rocky deep structure lakes with sparse vegetation grass or weeds. I use a more compact jig design similar to what Catt posted for grass and wood.

Tom

A 3/8 Arkie in Bluegill color is the closest I've found to perfect. Comes through rock and wood like a champ. Not too bad with grass, but I don't have much of that.
