Like the title states , what is your current rod , reel and line set up for flipping / pitching jigs around shallow cover ?

Gettin an NRX 894 and putting a Bantam mgl on it. I'll probably use 50# braid.

Power Pro.

 

Heavy Cover...7' Fenwick Techna AV MH/F, Curado I, 20lb Shooter.

Up to what weight will you use with the 894? I have the 893 with a bantam 

G. Loomis 803C and a Shimano Core.  It has worked great for years.  

An oz for sure. I havent done enough research to see if it makes a suitable punching rod. It would be bittersweet if it did! Bittersweet meaning I would then need 3 lol. I will acquire that 893 eventually to use for 1/4 to 3/8. The 894 will mainly chuck a 1/2oz and an occasional 3/4. I can't wait. I hope I can still use it this season by the time I can afford it. Mid oct eta and I'm in Indiana. Snow on Halloween is not uncommon but neither is 70 degrees. Lol

3/8 and 1/2 oz is a 7'1 MHXF daiwa tatula with 50lb braid and a 15-20lb big game leader. 1/4 ounce is a 7' mh duckett micro magic and 15lb big game. 3/4 is a dobyns 735 with 65lb braid or a 7'6 medium heavy daiwa tatula with 20lb big game. Depends in cover and clarity

The Tatula SV TWS is a great versatile reel, but has aluminum gears. If you're constantly hauling fish in heavy cover, the gears can get worn and get geary. Happened to me on a Tatula CT Type-R within a year on my frogging rod and I sent it in for replacement. I switched up to a Zillion TWS, and a SV103 for heavy duty cover (brass gears). An SV reel is nice for the technique though because if you set it up right, you can pitch the lure where it will hit the water and keep sinking down without an overrun, or needing to set tension really high and then having to strip out line as a lure hits the water. The new Alphas SV CT has brass gears (I think) and is readily available off Ebay.

That's gotta be for light cover. I have that rod with an aldebaran and I absolutely love it. It just doesn't have the power to drag them out of the grass.

Well thanks for the heads up! I wouldn’t wanna be stripped gears at 250$ lol. Any other reels you suggest? I honestly like the quantum PT and Lee’s reels to. But I don’t think they are as smooth as a daiwa

All brass gears in all tatula models. I use OG zillions and one bb1 pro that's held up admirably. 

I do all my jig fishing with ALX custom 6'10" jig rods with Tatula 8:1 reels, line varies usually 12 lb Shooter, except flipping.

My flipping rod is a Lamiglas 806 Dee Thomas with 4500C reel 60 lb Fins braid from the early 90's that I only use when fishing the Delta or Clear lake in NorCal, we don't have heavy cover on SoCal lakes.

If I want to fish SoCal weed mats or reeds I use a swimbait rod with Calcutta reel and 25 lb Armillo, don't put the flipping rod in the boat for the few times I may want to flip something in our local lakes.

Yeah, It’s a great setup but I don’t use it in really heavy cover.

Dobyns Champion 765 Flip matched with a  Zillion HD 8:1 and #20 Red Label

 

Dobyns Extreme 795 Flip & Punch matched with a Lews Tournament Pro 7.3:1 and #50 Smackdown braid

 

These three will cover any situation I would bump into.
