Shallow/ medium crankbait rod under $250

Featured Replies

Looking for crankbait rod around the 250 or less price point which i would also use to throw small jerkbaits. I know this isn't ideal but i really want to max out at 4 setups on my kayak, and i already have 3 I'm set on. Any suggestions for rods you guys like would be awesome. Hope everyone is doing ok in this stressful time.

Take a look at the Daiwa Tatula TTU701MRB. It is designed for exactly what you are looking for, and is a bargain in my opinion. You can actually get it for $110 from Sportsman's outfitters with free shipping right now. I picked it up for the same thing that you are looking to do, and have been impressed with it the few times I have had it out so far.

Thanks I'll check them out. I have a 7'2" mh expride already, and a tatula elite ags spinning rod so i definitely like both brands suggested. Anyone own the DC 705cb? Looks interesting but i was surprised its medium heavy. My lack of knowledge made me focus only on medium for crankbaits.

Don't confuse the Dobyns crankbait powers with the non-CB models.  The CB's are moderate actions.  Look at the bait weight range, line tests and type of baits you plan to throw.  I would research the Champion 704CB for your application.  This model does all my jerkbait work.  I also have the 705CB.  Good luck !

I find the 705cb surprisingly versatile, perfect for 1.5 and 2.5 squarebills as well as jerks, I throw the pointer 100sp and shadow raps on it. Lures at 3/8 oz or lighter is doable but a little trickier. I even occasionally throw spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and keitech/jigheads on it too.

I'd go to BPS and buy me a Crankin Stick for about $75, maybe less withe sale in progress.  Or a SC Mojo Glass Target Cranker for about $130.

Doubt you can tell the difference between them and a $200 rod especially for cranking.

Unfortunately, the new Crankin Stick's are ugly, but really good crank bait rods.  Glass/Graphite composite.

If i was going to squander $250, I'd buy a SC Legend Glass.

Dobyns 704CB Glass?

Expride 7 M glass rod would be great for small cranks. I bought it for that purpose. I have a 6'10 M for jerkbaits/topwater. I am guessing the 7 ft Medium could be used for ocassional jerk baits.

This would be a little over your budget but it would work for both crank baits and jerkbaits, which to me are to different rods....  St. Croix Legend Tournament 6'9'' MH Mod. Fast.

It's designed as a spinner bait rod.  I used a buddies a few years ago and liked it but it didn't seem to be like the ideal rod for just one thing.  Its taper was weird on hook sets but it had plenty of power.  It was kind of soft at the tip but not as soft as a glass crankbait rod and stiff at the bottom.   So it's sort fits in between two different rods, a crankbait rod and jerk bait rod.

The one I use currently for cranks and jerkbaits when I am in my kayak is the St. Croix Avid 7' M Fast.  Not ideal but I can use this rod for just about anything and the price is good for a quality rod.

No rules envolved, some threads continue for years beyond the original posters question being answered.
