Hello Bass Resource!

 

I don't post here often but I do pop on here once in a while. Over the last few years I have pestered the good anglers of Bass Resource regarding weight estimates of my potential PBs and everyone always had the same response: get a scale (the best advice, by the way, so thank you).  Well this year I finally got a scale, and two days ago I put it to good use on a definite new PB. I know it isn't a big Bass for a lot of anglers here but this fish has been a long time coming and it couldn't have been any more epic, at least for me.

 

Long story short, I discovered a spot two years ago that holds giants that I can sight fish. In 2019 I got my PB at the time there, and this year it happened again in the same spot. When I saw this big girl come out from under an overhang, I knew it was a PB fish and all my senses kicked into overdrive. I worked hard to entice it but at the same time not spook it. The first two presentations got rejected, and I thought at any moment I was going to screw everything up and watch my potential PB swim away. Finally it picked up a Texas rigged 5" paddle tail swimbait. I laid into the hook set hard and the rest is history. When I got the fish in my hands I knew instantly this was a special fish in my Bass fishing "career", and to top it all off I had it captured on a digital scale. 

 

Thank you Bass Resource for continuously telling me to get a scale. It was worth it, and I no longer have to play the guessing game. 

 

Oh yeah, and the official weight?

 

7lbs 5oz.

Lose the scale.   Scales lie to you.  I've had several different hand held scales and every one had the ability to turn an obvious 5 lb bass into a 3 lb 10 oz bass.   I got tired of being lied to.   Maybe the new scale is telling you a portion of the truth the first few times you use it, but that won't last.   Your scale, sooner or later, will lie to you.    I won't have a scale in my boat and I'd advise you take a hammer to yours.

He's not lying. I have been weighing every 3-10 I catch and I am certain they are at least 4 and a half if not 5.

 

I took my Rapala scales to the grocery store that my parents own the other day. I used their meat scales (which by law are calibrated by someone from the state dept or some big shot) so they are spot on. I filled a sack with some grapes and apples till it weighed 3 lb 14 oz. I took the sack home and just as I suspected the Rapala scales weighed it at ......................................3 lb 14 oz LOL

Where were you the last few years when I didn't have a scale?! ?

What is really strange to me is when you suspect your scale is showing lower weight than it should. Then I do a length and girth measurement and it is ALWAYS at least a pound more than your scale. I caught 2 fish a month or so ago that were both around 4 1/2- 4 3/4pounds in my estimation.Scale said 3.11 on both. Length to girth measurement formula ( on 2 different websites) said 4.11.

So I found a 5 pound weight and the scale said....5.3 ! ??‍♂️
