Reversing Braid Question

Featured Replies

I want to flip the braid on my spinning reels using some empty line spools and a drill motor. Can I mount the reel spool on a finish nail to do this without damaging the opening where it fits over the reel shaft?

Maybe maybe not ~

Either way this is another reason why this rig is exceptionally useful . . .

Its a pain in the neck but I either transfer it to another reel with an empty spool, then to another and then back on the reel that had the braid to begin with.  The other option is to just tie it to a tree or something and walk it out then spool it back up from the opposite end.

Looks nice, a tad on the pricy side. It would be nice if they had a mount for casting reels.

This is why you keep several plastic spools your line is sold on...

Or you can buy a spare spool, and save that spool just for this task. It would help if you plan to do it a lot during the year or if you have same size and similar models reel.

Another reason I only use 70yds for all my spinning reel. I just tape one side to other object and walk off, most of the time on grass. Walk back with reel on the rod and start spooling from the other end. Make sure to apply some pressure to reduce line twisted.

On high end reels, spare spools are too much $$$.  I just looked into this recently.  It would be nice though.

I do it.

Helps when several reels use the same spool.

My yard isn't that big, so I'll usually set up a pair of lawn chairs and do laps around them to unspool and respool my line.  It's kind of a pain to do, but it's not something I have to do that often.  If I'm going to transfer the line to another spool anyway, I have a spare reel to put it on first.

Points are well taken. Luckily I have 2-3 older Shimanos that came with a spare spool! Recently bought a Nasci that didn’t. Is this done anymore?

Far as I know - nobody supplies a spare spool anymore. Have to go get one either from the manufacturer or a third party.

I did some checking - it's about half the cost of a new reel to get a spare spool.

Pflueger Supreme - full reel - $104

Pflueger Supreme - spare spool - $51.59

Not always true. I got Tatula LT spool direct from Daiwa for 26 bucks. I can buy SLP WORKS spool that will fit my ballistic about 50 bucks or buy maybe fake? SLP spool for exceler at a whopping 19 bucks.

Shimano, on the other hand will cost me about 40-50 bucks for CI4. The Nasci 2500 spool is 30 bucks from shimano.

in answer to your original question about the nail, no way would I do that.  The other suggestions on here are far superior to that.

Just tie it to a tree and walk it off.

I flip my braid on the lake. Remove lure, pull 20' off into the water, hold the end, idle until I get to my braid/mono knot, cut and retie knot, and reel it in. It's the quickest way I've found, takes just a couple minutes.

In the past I used a empty 2 liter bottle. Put the end under the cap then wound down the bottle doing my best not to overlap the wraps (only wrapped snug not tight). Then just reeled it back on from the other end. Its not a super fast way to do it (wrapping down the bottle without significant overlap is tedious) but it is a super cheap way. I now have two empty reels that I use.

GreenPig has the optimum solution; never thought of that.

What is the advantage to flipping braid?  Some of my older Penn conventionals had the same Power Pro on them for 4 or 5 years without issue.  These were my St Clair River reels I'd rig up to catch walleye, steelhead, and salmon, fishing 1lb to 2lb of lead to keep my rig from drifting in the fast current.  The St Clair River is pretty rocky and I've never had any line issues just leaving it be.

I have tried this with Power Pro on a spinning reel and didn't have much luck.  It seemed the line had tons of loops and twists.  It was spooled tight and looked good and was done from spool to spool on a machine but casting and retrieving was awful.

So this pertains to spinning reels?  I'm intrigued, never heard of reversing braid so I'm just looking to be in the know.

This is what the OP was trying to accomplish but I have seen posts asking this question before on pretty much any type of reel.  Bottomline, I am not a fan of the it but the idea is to save line and use what is close to the center of spool since it is new.

I tie it to my fence and walk it off.  tie the other end on and reel it back on.
