Who has boat Insurance?

(raises his hand) It's only a canoe, but the liability insurance is the main part.

With a rider on the policy, yes. That's an additional cost.

Yep - canoe and trailer together.

My insurance covers the boat, trailer and electronics.  I have a separate writer for my tackle.

You say "only a canoe", but the the canoe, electronics and gear, I'm sure you into it for a pretty good chunk of change?

Canoe, trailer, battery, TM and fishfinder...closing in on 2-grand.

Same here. I called to double check. All electronics, TM, and anything else that is attached to the boat is covered. Separate rider for tackle, rods and all other personal items. And yes the trailer is covered.

This is me too.  I actually just switched policies in January to a new provider at a rate that was significantly lower with the same coverage.

My agent told me that anything physically "attached" to the boat or trailer is covered under the policy.  Like if its bolted down or attached in some other way (bow mount, talon, electronics, etc).

Fishing tackle is under the policy but it has a specific statement/disclaimer provided.

Boat insurance in Minnesota is mandatory if you are still paying it off.  It is optional otherwise.  But frankly based on the dirt cheap cost it is, if your watercraft has any type of value, I'm not quite sure why you wouldn't have it.

I've had Progressive through USAA since 2016.

Covers the Whole Kitt & Caboodle.

Been good; which means I haven't had to use it yet.

And that's my favorite kind of insurance.

Just saying.

Believe it or not, USAA couldn't save me anything. I've been with Metropolitan so long I get boocoo discounts since I bundle everything together.

I do the same with USAA -

Makes a significant difference.

Well, ya - but I've also been with Met forever...was a junior on the parent's car policy until I went into the AF in 1980 when I split off onto my own policy. House purchase in 1986 started the bundling.

When you've been on their 'rolls' for over 40 years with few incidents...they give you 'loyalty' discounts.

USAA's best quote for me was 5% over what I pay Met directly.

Progressive here as well.

I like that the electronics / gear is covered as well as the trailer and actual boat. They have great options for new boats with total loss coverage. I am sure it is pricey, I did not look at that though.

Same here. You're right, for the money it's well worth it.

I was told by my agent that additional insurance for the trailer isn't really worth it, so I didn't get it.

I went with progressive.  $160 a year which, includes on the water towing which,  is a must for the Great Lakes.  Only thing the insurance doesn't cover is my tackle and or rods unless they are locked up.  I don’t have rod lockers so no really way to lock those up. I believe, I’d have to look for sure at the policy but, I have $500,000 in liability insurance.  Electronics snd trolling motor are covered.  It also covers the trailer

Progressive is great to deal with. I filed a claim last year. I hit a rock at high speed in shallow water. Cracked the transom at the corners. They paid for everything. Used my vanishing deductible. So my cost was $0.

Go thru a company called World Wide Marine Insurance in Michigan. They will set you up, with the company best for you.

Ask for an “agreed replacement value” of the boat in a total loss. You and the insurance company agree on the replacement cost up front.

Ask for gear replacement insurance. I carry $10,000. Take pictures of everything in your boat. EVERYTHING.

State Farm for me for boat and trailer. $7/month. Gear is covered under my homeowners policy.

Lots to think through.  Having just done it myself, I made this video.  I cued it up to the boat insurance part:

Call Bob at World Wide Marine Underwriters. Best coverage, best pricing. They are a broker, not an insurer. They will set you up with a policy that works for you. I dropped State Farm (who insures may home and car) after I found out they were charging me double what they should have for boat insurance.

Yep, I use Bob @ WWM, his team is really responsive and Progressive had the best rates for me too.
