I think bait selection is the easiest part of bass fishing  so I say right spot .

Me also.

Choosing the right spot is more important - if the bass ain't there, no bait will help.

Even a Pop Max? :)

If I get on the right spot at the right time, seems like I can catch fish on a variety of baits as long as I get the depth and speed somewhat right.

Don't own one, so no idea...;)

Can't count the number of times I have said, "There has to be a fish there" and I've persisted by slowing down, using multiple lures, and finally just letting something sit until I'm bored.  85% of the time I am rewarded with a fish.  Now, if I'm spending 20 minutes, five lure changes, and 100 casts on that one stump because I have some inside knowledge about it....what about all the other stumps that I DO NOT have inside knowledge about?  It's the spot.  It's the spot and then the bait, I suppose.

I got on this train a while ago and simply refuse to get off ~

Right place.

Right time.

Right thing.

And for those of us who have done some saltwater fishing,

inshore, off shore & virtually anything in between,

It's The Law.

Fish Hard

I think Buck Perry (back in the 1970s Fishing Facts magazines, along with his book, Spoonplugging in ‘73) was the first to write extensively about the three requirements for successful fishing:  being in the right place, at the right time, and fishing in the right manner. Nothing has changed that IMO over the last 50 years.

I was working a show with Gary Klein at a Gander Mountain store one time and at lunch we were just shooting the breeze and the topic of bait selection came up.  His answer to me was “If I can find the fish, normally there are at least 5 different lures I can catch them on”.

 I always remembered that.

Well it's obvious they can't agree on anything. Ask what the best color is you'll get the same response.  The correct answer is... The right spot THEN selecting the right bait(s) for that spot.

Location, location, location hasn’t changed in decades.

Several different lures often work at the right location.

Spot before lure. You select the lure to properly target the bass on the right spot.

Location..like Tom said.

Right spot and I’m sticking to it because she said so too, lol. When I first started fishing I would make beautiful and excellent presentations but I was wondering why I had no takers. Then it hit me. It doesn’t matter good your presentation is. You cannot catch what is not there. It was a big doh! moment.

Spot.  Catch catch ‘em where they ain’t.

If I’m not confident with the bait I’m using, the chances of getting skunked greatly increase. At least that’s what it seems like.

The spot. Find the fish then figure out what they are biting.

It’s a silly question

Can’t catch em if they’re not there.
I don’t care who you are.

I can’t believe the pro’s who answered “bait” really understood the question.

But Hey, that’s  just me

You can throw a $50 lure in a swimming pool and it won't catch fish, but it looks pretty. No different than throwing a $50 lure in water that holds zero fish.

There's no money in endorsing spots on public lands.  But they can pay some bills endorsing baits.

  • Super User

Well if you have the right location, it's the matter of finding out what they bite, so I'm going with location.

I still haven't caught a bass in a lake that does not have bass in it, but man I would be a legend if I could make that happen!
