I still use an Abu 5600 C3 Hank Parker reel.  It's the one I use for punching.

While I do like & use low profile reels,

Round Revolving Spool gear takes it's fair share of fatties.

Only for catfishing. There is nothing wrong with them tho...first 10 years of my bass journey I had a spinning combo and an ugly stick with a Garcia 5500. Caught alot of fish.

My C3's and Quantum Irons have been relegated to catfish duty these days.

Haven't used them in awhile, but I still have a couple old BPS pro qualifier round reels. I don't know who made those, but they are still smooth as butter after I don't know how many seasons. Really well built reels.

I do in saltwater. Either on a boat or when casting heavy weights. I don’t know why, but I cast very heavy baits, like bunker chunks, better on a big, old, round Abu.

I have 8 round reels,5 1600 pro/black max Ambassadeurs,3 4600s....use em all the time.use low profile also but love my Ambassadeurs.

Forgot to mention that the round reels have been known

I have seven round reels rigged up and ready to go with a couple of dozen on standby. I started using ABU Ambassadeurs about 1968 and never found a compelling reason to change.

Never used one.  Is there any inherent advantage?

Calcutta:

solid as an anvil,

versatile as a pair of Channellocks®,

& dependable as a 30/30

Before I sold all my fishing gear some years ago, the Calcutta reels were my goto for swimbaiting, loved them. Now that I'm retired and don't have the income I use to have, just can't afford them. Ahh, the good old days..?

Most of my reels are low profile.  I have one old Calcutta 250 that I use for spinnerbaits.  It's a workhorse.  I find most current reels are too fast for spinnerbait fishing.  I just purchased a Shimano Chronarch MGL.  I like it, but it's seems too small for my hands.

I have some Calcuttas that I use for real swim baits.

I believe the Calcutta was the best bass reel ever made.  Simple, light and tough.  All these people that think they need a computer to keep from backlashing should learn how to cast. (just kidding)  ?

With a bit of customizing, you can improve them.

I had Delaware Valley Tackle add ABEC5/7 ceramic bearings & Carbontex Drag Washers.
