If you do some half-hitches on top of your standard arbor knot you can tie braid directly to the spool with no backer, tape, etc.

I just now tied some brand new braid to a brand new spool using an arbor knot and four half hitches, but stopped short of actually spooling it up. With the braid wrapped around a gloved hand several times I can't make it budge on the spool. What am I missing?

Do your thing bro! I hope you won’t have to hand line a 5lber when it eventually slips.

Only because I haven't seen this one mentioned.

Big baits catch big fish............That implies that small baits won't and I've caught enough small bass on big baits and big bass on small baits that I choke on my words when I tell other club members that I caught that 6lb. bass on a BIG swimbait.  A 4in. one is big, right? :smile2:

The two for me is that bass are line shy, and clear water is difficult to fish. Having grown up near a gin clear lake and vacationing on a clear lake I have found clear water fish more predictable and easier to catch than dirty water fish. As far as the line shy thing goes I have never seen it make a difference. I even had good success with the old XT solar line in clear water. Only reason I use a flouro leader on some combos is for abrasion resistance.

On a standard spool, without any fixture (ie. tape), braid will slip. Been there don’t that. Thought my drag was busted.

It has never happened to me. Not on any spool, even reeling down to smooth Bakelite or chromed stainless steel. I regularly cast down to my spool knot without a problem. You just need a tail at least half the width of the spool arbor and a tight knot. On modern reels, with textured and dimpled spools it’s impossible.

I don't see too many of these perpetuated here, but maybe elsewhere.  Two terms that make my skin crawl are: "reaction bite" and "confidence bait".

Two of the most meaningless terms in fishing.

It's got that erratic action that big bass can't resist. What does that even mean?

I've wondered what this means also. Almost any bait can be made to have that " erratic action".

Not bass but the myth that crappie always feed up. Guess the crappie were upside down and thought the ned rig and rage craw were above them and not being worked on the bottom.

Small, and I mean itty bitty lures only catch small fish. Well maybe the 2.7lb bass thought my little 1/64oz Panfish Magnet looked big???.... It was a spec in the fish's mouth and it still tried to eat it.

How about "if the bass aren't biting it's because they're already full and there's literally nothing you can do about it".

Come to think of it, that one I made up to tell myself on days when I'm struggling.

X2 had some amazing afternoon summer outings this year

Based on experience I don't believe in any of this.

*Watermelon doesn't work in stained to dirty water

*Spinnerbaits don't work on days with no wind

*Wind blown bank is always the best

*Match the hatch with crawfish species

*Bass stop biting in the winter

*Buzzbaits don't work on glass water

*KVD stock hooks lose fish

*Walmart doesn't have a good fishing section

I forgot one of my favorites: the fish are feeding up to (fill in the blank)

the fish are feeding up so they can spawn

the fish are feeding up to recover from the spawn

the fish are feeding up in summer because their metabolism is faster

The fish are feeding up in fall for approaching winter

Fish are feeding up all winter because the dying shad are so easy to eat

In summary: fish eat stuff

After forty years of bass fishing, I've heard and read many things which I consider to be completely false regarding our sport.                       Some of these things were written by some well known writers years ago, other things I heard from other fisherman.                   Here's a few " non truths", that I've proven to be wrong myself.                                                       1. Hair or bucktail jigs only work in cold water. False.                        2. Plastic worms won't work in colder water. False.                      3. Surface and topwater baits won't work in cooler water. False.                                                             4. Spinning tackle can't land good size fish. False.                         5. Spincasting reels will never land good size fish. False.               6. Dark colored soft plastic baits are always best in dark or off colored water. False.                           7. The drag on a baitcasting reel is really not important. Always crank it down tightly. False.                                              8. Big bass can't be landed on light mono line of 6 or 8lb strength. False.                                          9. A bright colored lure is always the best for night fishing. False.                                                           10. You need a 500 dollar rod to feel a soft jig bite. False.               These are just a hand full of falsehoods I've learned through the years. Some of them are still being taught even today.            Do you agree or disagree? And, please post some non truths that you've learned yourself over time.                                     Let's clear the air.....

It's all marketing and racketeering to sell the fanciest stuff on the market, more stuff catches fisherman on shelves than fish

The way the fish have been biting for me I think they have gone on a starvation diet.

They are starving themselves in preparation to go trick or treating

Bass fishermen are open minded…FALSE

Soap box time.  I am always amazed at how dead set people are in their opinions (and they are opinions).  So many stories that start off with “once I did ____ so that means it’s not true”.  The reality is there are few absolutes in bass fishing.  Can you get bit on a spinnerbait in no wind?  Sure, but there may be better choices.  Will a bass hit a watermelon worm in dirty water?  Sure, but you may be better off with something less translucent.  Does the wind from the east… saying have any merit?  Well, it can certainly be an indicator of pre-frontal, frontal, and post frontal conditions.  People would be better off considering different views instead of trying to convince others that their views are wrong because of their “once upon a time” stories.  Want proof, go to pretty much any thread and see how quickly it gets divided into camps and the lengths people will go to support their camp.  There are NO absolutes.

Sorry for the rant.  I just think so many potentially valuable discussions are derailed unnecessarily.

Morgan Freeman Applause GIF by The Academy AwardsCouldn’t agree more!

I agree with all of the above.

I caught an 18lb channel catfish on 4lb test berkley xl before.

Probably the MOST important thing on a baitcaster is your spool tension.  Second is the drag.

I fish dark colors in the middle of the day and catch big bass....likewise translucent watermelon colors at dusk.

Best post of the day….maybe the month.

I'll add one to this list:

Fluorocarbon line is less visible underwater than clear mono:. False
