They seemed to have no problems with this one.

1/4 oz football head jig with a Yamamoto twin tailed hula grub has caught a lot of smallies.  A lot.

I’ll always have a finesse jig of some kind in my deck when fishing for smallmouth, but……..

Don’t discount a big jig for smallmouth, especially when fishing offshore

these two fell for a 1/2 oz poison tail jig with a Zoom Salty Pro Chunk

Just because they’re called smallmouth you  would be surprised at how big a meal they will eat

^what he said!

I was fishing off the bank below a dam for striper one time with a big live bluegill, like one you would eat. Got a hard hit near the rocks under my feet, and caught a 2.5 lb smallmouth

River fishing for smallmouths is the most fun I ever had while fishing .I have to agree with every post .   Removing the skirt from a jig and replacing it with a Hula grub has been a deadly combo . I have these tubes molded onto a jig head with a wire weed guard that are a killer . I think they were made by Stanley .

I catch a lot of smallies on smaller jigs, sure, but I definitely catch enough of them on 3/8+ sized jigs that I don't buy any of the talk about these jigs being too big for them to eat, you'd be astonished at the number of half pound smallies that will obliterate a half oz football head or arkie jig.

My favorite combo for clear water is an 1/8oz black finesse jig with the small big bite craw worm trailer in black neon. I also notice that I don’t get stuck as much when working a jig with the flow of the river instead of against it.

The weight of a jig has everything to do with depth but very little impact on the size of the jig.

I can deliver a very large (+8") fly streamer in 2ft of water and be 6" above the bottom without snags but by far the most fun and the easiest is on a fly rod.

BUT the spinning rod is more versatile than anything else.
