A sports question.

I hear the term " dime " in many sports articles that I read and it's becoming more popular.

Is it just a cliche word that fits anywhere?

Examples:

Steph Curry was dropping dimes.

Lebron James was dishing dimes.

Tom Brady threw the perfect dime.

Am I just not cool enough to understand?

In basketball it means an assist. Not sure why it would be used in football.

Back in the day where I grew up it meant calling the cops.

Basketball - pretty assist

Football - perfect pass

Had to look it up.

Not just the perfect pass but put it in a "dime" size hole.

I’m think I’m out of touch.   I don’t understand anything in this thread.  To me a dime = 10 cents.   ?

  • Super User

Dime=perfect 10

Basketball it has always been assists.

A dime is the smallest coin.
So In football if a pass is thrown to the smallest open spot that only the receiver can get it, that is called “dropping a dime” or “ putting it on a dime”

Don’t know anything about basketball.

In fishing it would be like hitting a spot no bigger than a coffee cup.

Back in the day a slider was often called a nickel or dime type slider.

When throwing a slider the seems spinning on the ball at a high spin rate that made it look like a red dot to a hitter. A good slider was considered a dime slider because the dot was perceived to be dime size. A so-so one was the size of a nickel and often called a nickel curve.

Even I could do that with those deflated footballs he uses!
