Time to talk about protection from the sun?

Featured Replies

The modern stuff is so much cooler fully covered up than exposed.

Just about everyone has some sort of cooling tech and the stuff really works. Huk's IconX shirts are head and shoulders above the rest; I've tried nearly every brand now and there's some little details like ventilation that matter a lot.

I don't like the face buff, so I usually wear a big brim, spf100, and leave the buff around my neck.

I can fish longer, and cooler, and a side benefit is I probably won't be getting stuff cut off my hands and face in later life.

I never go shirtless anymore.  Wide brim hat, and plenty of sunscreen applied at intervals.  This year I might buy a sun shirt.

I wear cotton, I can’t stand those plastic shirts that claim to wick sweat away and make you cool. Your body sweats for a reason . Mine sweats way more than others so modern fabrics feel like hefty bags once sweaty. Cotton breathes

I don’t walk out of the front door without hat and shades , even in the rain. I like sunscreen too

I wear a wide brim hat, either Panama or Boonie.  Also, have a couple of what I call Lefty Kreh hats with a long bill, flaps that cover my ears and neck.  Long pants, sneakers, t-shirt with a light long sleeve shirt over it.  Anything not covered gets a liberal application of sunscreen.  I wear Cocoon polarized sunglasses over my prescription lenses.  Like TnRiver46,  I wear a hat and sunglasses when I go out of the house.  I'm paying for the sins of my youth when it was cool to have a great suntan.  I had, fortunately, a pre-cancerous growth removed from the top of my head about 15 years ago.  I visit my dermatologist every six months for full body check-up.

Shorts, Cotton T-shirt, hat, sunglasses and flip flops. Tried a Huk long sleeve shirt a couple times and it was too hot for me.

I had the same problem with the sun shirts. I’m in a kayak so between the shirt and PFD I was so hot I felt dizzy and I might fall over

It doesn't if it gets wet.  In the heat of summer, it won't make a difference but if you wear cotton when its cold out as an underneath layer and then work up a sweat, you'll pay the price.  I wore cotton once on my way to the deer stand, worked up a sweat, and then tried to sit there for hours on end.  I darn near froze and it wasn't even that cold out.

Cotton t-shirts are fine in the warmer months for me.  In fact, that's primarily what I wear.

I haven't decided what I like best yet. I use sunscreen and wear shorts when I bank fish. I've used a UV shirt but it's a cheap one. A little hot but it works. Sunscreen goes on everything exposed and it works really well. I don't need to reapply it much if at all.

Don't forget your ears and nose, back of the neck!

I pretty much have done the same in the kayak but I am going to experiment. I have gloves, the shirts. I've gone in the yak fully clothed too, complete with sneakers and pants.

If you wear a ball cap be careful, I feel like I get too much sun through mine. Or maybe it irritates my head, it never looks burned.

Big vented straw hat for me. Baseball hats make me sweat to much and I can’t use the mesh style hats. I have no hair lol and get little mesh sunburn marks

We don’t have colder months so I use it year round. That plastic stuff is way worse than cotton when wet, stinks too

What plastic stuff?

Shirts that aren’t cotton

Just because a shirt isn’t cotton doesn’t mean it’s plastic. Lol. There’s other fibers out there and none of them are made of plastic.

It’s a bunch of long words that start with poly, aka plastic

It’s a very similar substance to plastic, stretched into fibers and woven. Cotton is the original breathable, and not an insulating layer. Totally been there in a deer stand with a sweaty cotton t-shirt, freezing to death. There’s nothing better in a hot summer in Memphis though.

I hear that (see photo to the left)!

I wonder if a little sun sneaks through, but I mostly feel irritated along the edge or band of the hat. I washed the hat recently too so it isn't that.

Just remembered I did an experiment today! I put lotion on my head today, THEN the cap, and my head feels fine. No itch. Wasn't in the sun as long as usual but...hmmmmm.

I only wear the ballcap because I clip a GoPro to it. I used to use a bucket hat but can't use it with the camera. I used a chest mounted cam and a hat cam a few weeks ago and probably looked ridiculous. Don't care! I should get a drone to follow me too. Or 3! *

* and that will be the next cartoon that I draw LOL!

Remember ................YOU have to sweat !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or you are dehydrating your guts !!!! I used to not drink while on the water.   O K

Then I passed a JAGGED  BLACK   Kidney Stone.  Pain was so bad I was hallucinating & sweating on the stretcher.  The hospital E R tossed me into a bed & I V needle for a day. Nurse said my pain was about 1/5 of a woman giving birth .

I now go thru water bottles faithfully each trip.  I sweat a little & feel NOT TIRED at 3 pm.

I prefer vented high collar shirts, that said summer weight wool if quickly becoming my go to.  Marino wool is expensive but is often on sale.

Minus 33 makes some of the best shirts I have worn in the Winter AND Summer and doesn't require evaporation to cool like many synthetics.

I am slowly replacing all my cotton T's with wool.

My  ....Dorfman Pacific company.... Hats are outstanding Machine washing.  I have 5 of the beauties.  The front face piece keeps small bugs out of eyes & face or neck. The chin strap is good to 40 mph.

i drink a half gallon of water a day when fishing, i also drink a quart of Powerade and that really makes me feel great wading and bank fishing.

I take my shirt off while I’m fishing . Sometimes I just wear a speedo. If it’s good enough for Brazilians hey , it’s good enough for me.

One bummer about bank fishing is the weight of water. I'm always trying to lighten the pack, but water is not an option. I'm gonna get one of those mini water filters for backpacking just in case, as long as you know the water is safe to do that with. I spilled my water once on a hot day and had to leave early.
