Another vote for the Slug-Go!

On a calm summer evening, a slow steady blurp blurp blurp of a Jitterbug is like bass fishing magic.

Around here nobody throws poppers anymore..well nobody besides me and my buddy Brian. Saw a guy throwing a plopper last summer to no avail...I told him in my local pond I have much better luck on a buzz bait or a 1\4oz Popper..he said he didn't own either. I agree with rapala floating minnows as well...I've got a couple for this spring...never seen anybody throw one. Another forgotten bait I throw? Mr twister phenom worms. Ive never seen one here in 20+ years bass fishing the same ponds...besides mine of course.

Yes to the Rapala floating minnow!!! So under rated and under utilized. 

Slug-Go, Tubes, Hula/spider grubs, Chug Bug, and Rapala minnows (float and countdown) all are worth mentioning 

I loved Sluggos when they 1st came out.

Rapala and Bagley balsa wood baits.  Still using them with great success.  Now the two companies seem to have been unified, which is probably not a bad thing. Also Mann's jelly worms and auger tails.  Still available and give your tackle boxes a pleasant smell!

Spoons were popular back in the day for a number of reasons.  The first was weight.  The reels of the day were heavy and clunky.  The handles spun on the cast and the line was like cable.  Even then, a 3/4 oz. Johnson Silver minnow could be cast a country mile.  The second was they were relatively weedless.  I knew Everglades and Okeechobee fishermen who never fished anything but a spoon and they caught lots of fish. Back then, a pork rind trailer was standard.  Later plastic worm trailers were used.  A great Everglades nighttime bait was a black Johnson's spoon with a black worm trailer.  

 

When I was 13, my parents let me spend my summers with a Navy Chief who fished for bass at night.  All he used was a black musky jitterbug.  I have one in my lure collection.  We never caught a bass less than five pounds on that bait. I remember one bass that struck the lure right at the boat throwing water all over us. Great memories.

If you turn the blades around it will stay in the strike zone that much longer. ?

I use most of the lures mentioned pretty regularly.  But I guess I'm slow to adopt to new lures when the old ones still work.  I trust my own experience over advertising.  

 

For instance, I've been sleeping on the shaky head for too long now.  I thought, I have ned rigs and T-rigged worms, why do I need another worm?  I just tried one out for the first time this last weekend and was getting bit on almost every cast once I figured it out!

In my opinion an underrated one is the jitterbug (although it isn't necessarily a year round lure).

And another question. I hear a lot about flutter spoons in the summer. Is this to say they do not produce well at other times of the year?

Single tail on a jig for going all old school.

I think Slider Fishing. Still popular with older anglers who remember them. Lots of younger guys may not have heard of Sliders these days. They still work.

I have a whole gallon bag of single tail grubs in my boat, 3, 4, and 5 inch. Scrubbing a grub is deadly but has been completely replaced by boot tail swimbaits

I’m not sure I even know the name. Think it is an old discontinued zoom craw worm. Received them as a gift from an older guy who I talk with a bunch while home. He loves that bait

Just spit-balling here, but is dead stickin still a thing? Used to work great in the dog days of summer and just after ice out for me.

Every time a thread like this pops up, at least a couple folks reminisce about Slug-Gos....and every time, I break them out for an hour or so....and every time, I wonder just wth you guys are talking about.....never had even a whiff of a bite with one....I must fish around younger bass who just point and laugh at what that geezer in the yak is tossing
