What is the ideal reel speed for jerk bait , a fast speed is required for this technique?

Not sure what Ideal would be, but I've always tossed mine on a 6 speed reel, which seems to work for my style of fishing jerk baits.

Honestly, I couldn't see why you would need a faster reel than a 6 speed.

I use a 6 or 7.  If the hooks are as sharp as they should be the fish will hook himself when he tries to blow the bait out.

Your just rolling up slack so it really doesn't matter. 6 or 7 something : 1. The majority of the time they get it on the pause.

I'm throwing mine on the slower SLX MGL, which I believe is a 7.2, and works fine for easily picking up slack between twitches. Just a 1/4 turn every other pop and you're good.

 

I like this little reel for that. I always struggled with throwing a jerkbait on a casting setup due to how they fly so inconsistently. One time they fly nice, then the next time they tumble, catch air and cause over-run in the reel. I don't know why it isn't an issue with this reel other than maybe because it casts so well you don't have to overpower it and risk the over-runs.

What ever ratio gives you the IPT you need to quickly pick up the slack after a twitch.

 

I'm using a 7.3 Fuego (30.5IPT) currently with a 7.1 Supreme (29IPT) as my secondary jerk-reel.

I used to be a firm believer that one speed, one reel did it all. The user needed to speed up or slow down.

BUT……now after being on this forum and getting introduced to the Monkey. 
I’ve realized that people have a comfortable cadence that they retrieve at, you know the speed you crank at without think about it. Mine might be faster or slower than yours, match what’s comfortable to what type your fishing….jerk, top water or finesse.

I’m using  a 6:8  or higher for jerk bait.

Watch out …. When you start matching reels to fishing type, then matching rods too….. you end up with a lot of rod and reels..

Ahhhh the simple times…. When I thought one or two rigs would do for everything.

It would be whatever you are comfortable with. For me it's a 7.x:1.

I know the feeling very well… im doing exactly this now building a combo for specific technique… that is the reason for the question since I’m to build a combo just for jerkbait

7 or 8 to 1. 

The best speed is the one the fish tell you they like. Vary your receives until you start catching fish and fry to replicate what you did.  This applies to all lures

I overfish mine on high speed reels, so a 6.3 is ideal for me, but it really doesn't matter for jerkbaits. 

I like a faster reel, around 29 IPT (usually around a 7.x:1 gear ratio most of the time). But I will manage on a slower or faster reel too if needed - I wouldn't sell my jerkbait reel if it was a different speed.

One consideration is how close you work the lure to the boat. A 7:1 helps me recover the lure once it’s out of the strike zone and make the next cast. Just a thought.
