People outside of this area don't know the awesome power of the Great Lakes.  They very seldom give back what they take, and this info graphic shows what happens to freighters if they aren't mindful of the conditions.

 

We used to eat breakfast in North East PA located on the lake. There is a large map on the wall in the entrance hallway depicting known wrecks on lake Erie. As I recall there were over a thousand ships that went down. Lake Erie being the shallowest of the great lakes makes it the most treacherous.

Lake Erie can get pretty nasty over here on the western shore.  A couple of years back, me and a friend were in the lower Detroit River jigging walleye.  We then decided to hit the delta where the river flows into Erie and made a U turn when we got sight of the water conditions.  Huge waves coming up and the boats we could see were being thrown around like little toys.  We were only in a 14' so we went back up the river instead.  It was far too risky for the little boat we were in.

I got a news flash for ya….

 

 

It does the same to bass boats! ??

In general people have no idea the enormous power of water, floods are a great example, every year countless people die needlessly in floods by being ignorant of the power of water.

 

As a former whitewater kayaker, the power of water is mind boggling sometimes.

I have the Lake Ontario version of this map in the bathroom at my house. My guests always go in there to look at it haha.

Not that I recall, I did it in college and a little after but then moved on to other hobbies.   Just not a lot of good runs in Alabama, TN has some amazing ones though.  

 

I only got into it because they gave me elective credits for Kayak 1 and Kayak 2 at Auburn....yeah yeah save the Auburn jokes ?

That guy I know that used to run bulldog bend said he paddled with somebody foshee, I think it was John, all over the southeast on some wicked whitewater. Nantahala , ocoee, etc. He had a pic of them going over a huge waterfall in a canoe! They mainly used canoes as I think it was back pre 90s before kayaks became so popular 

 

 

as for shipping on the Great Lakes, we all know that the witch of November can sometimes come early

Not gonna lie, didn't really want to die for a hobby ?   Only did 3s and below in a skirted kayak, but have rafted a few 4s and 5 in Bend Oregon on the Deschutes River.    Not sure I could have done the 4s and 5 in the kayak.   Massive amounts of water and force.

Yeah whitewater kayaking is huge here, little trout streams turn into class V quick when it rains hard. They do unfortunately pull some folks out of the water every year it seems. A guy that used to be my boss kayaked the entire Grand Canyon for 18 days

If it was anything like it is now, your old boss waited years for that opportunity.    When I was looking into 15 years ago or so, it was 3-4yr waiting list lol.   

 

Once in a lifetime trip, and I bet he relished his time there.
