Anyone use a cast net and fish finder to net their own baitfish?  just curious if anyone has success with this, especially for those guys with boats/kayaks

A lot people use them here to catch shad and shiners. If had to rely on my cast netting skills to fish, I’d never get to fish.   
They use hog finisher to chum them in, then cast over the beds. 
Like @WRB mentioned some states they don’t allow cast nets in fresh water. 

Absolutely. I also throw it in shallow shoals and rapids with no fish finder required

A few of my friends in FL use them for shiners.

I catch shiners for some friends.

I've used them  a lot on visible balls of shad for catfishing . I never tried finding the  bait with my depth finder ,good idea though.

Not allowed in Michigan either.

MN they allow you to use one to take Gizzard Shad only, for bait purposes. Net has to be no more that 5' diameter with 3/8"-5/8" mesh size. Then you have to use those shad in the same body of water you caught them in...and dispose of any excess in the trash...no returning them to the water.

Excuse my ignorance..But what is hog finisher? 

 

Some type of hog food? 

 @RRocket ,yes it’s hog food, they feed pigs different protein foods through out their life. It sinks to the bottom, the shiner guys will broad cast it in an area, go do a few areas like that. Then they come back and cast net, I’m no expert but I think they use because it’s cheaper than  fish food. And most fish food floats. This sinks and stays in one area, they cast net it a few times.

Any idea what's in it...ingredients?
