Fishin Dad
I want to explore new lakes and not get so set on trying to figure out tournament lakes. I also get hung up on the hot lakes and want to go there too often and catch fish. I know that may sound crazy, but fishing can be really good around here and 50+ fish days are common if you want them. Exploring new lakes and figuring them out is fun and rewarding. There is a lot learning that takes place in the process as well. Now, I just have to wait another 5 months to do it!!

The YouTuber, NDYakAngler, fishes a lot in MN and he catches big bass, both LM and SM, fine muskies, and big pike, so I totally believe in 50-fish days.
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted January 2 Super User Share Posted January 2 Jig is an easy bait to fish but sometimes a difficult bait to make work in small bodies of water, especially ponds. I'm not sure the reason for this and it is far from a 'rule'. Just want to make sure you have some expectation management @ol'crickety. Swimming a jig can be an exception.

But I'm cookin I gotta send you a message because I’ve been gone in NC and I didn’t keep track of the weather. If you are going for 10lber, prespawn could be your deal and I don’t know when we are looking at that to begin. Kinda wondering if the earliest stages are right about now.

I don't need to catch hundreds. Just enough to give me confidence with a jig. I've jigged for walleyes and done well and caught smallies on jigs too. Now I want to catch some lmbs. My goal for 2024 is to go the entire year without making a single tackle purchase. No hooks, no lures, no line, no plastics, nothing. That's right. You heard it here first. ZERO purchases for 365 days. I can get by with what I already have. Since you're not buying any tackle in 2024 I'm going to see if I can make it all the way through 2024 without getting a haircut. 1

Ah yes the yak man, well i have stood in yak mans shoes at Baldhill dam north of Valley City, North Dakota, the dam is highly featured in a couple of his muskie catching videos. I caught 4 muskies in half a day standing in the same spot yak man and everyone else stands along with pike, brownies, walleye, white bass, bullheads and panfish. All muskies I caught using a 1/4 oz ballhead jig while fishing for walleye using 30# and 20# fluro leaders to braid. I wasnt even trying to catch muskie that day but it sure was a blast having to play them out knowing my jig or leader could break at any moment. I geuss what i am saying is anyone is likely to catch a muskie there as long as you know the time of year to go to Baldhill dam and pick a day when the weather has heavy low hanging clouds and cool out, your chances of catching a muskie increase significantly. Yak man knows this and so do many others at Baldhill Dam. The North Dakota Fisheries which is located right there at baldhill dam shoud catch and tag the muskies below the dam as i bet i have caught the same ones yak man has. When we put our walleye on the stringer the big pike and muskie hang around and more than once we watched them take a bite out of our stringer and also grab our catch we are reeling in and have to wait for it to open its mouth and release our catch as we have it pinned against the rocks. Yak man also fishes the Ottertail river in minnesota, i watched his videos and went to every dam in and around Fergus Falls minn. and fished the same rocks he has. If you know the Fergus Falls area or just search google maps you can easilly find the dam areas he fishes and the exact parts of the river, easy peasy as the ottertail is a great fishery for smallmouth.

RipzLipz
@LrgmouthShad Jigs work fine in small waters I fish, between 7 & ~100 acres. I find the bite not to be as consistent as it might be on giant reservoirs, especially waters lacking numerous rocky areas. The coal strip pits are typically mucky bottomed after decades of leaves & runoff but some shale rock areas will still exist. Jig bite is strong from ice out until the spawn ends. Vegetation makes jig fishing these places more difficult as the water/weather warms. I’ve not given swim jigging a fair shot, which would be a logical technique to fish through the weeds, as I’m usually fishing for larger bass & tend to throw what has produced bigger bites for the given time of year. Another lake I frequent is a small reservoir but has much more rock & littered with laydowns with less vegetation & the jig bite is much more consistent throughout the year. Not claiming any of this as a rule of thumb, just my experiences on small waters north of Mason Dixon line.👍 Hope to see @Woody B sporting shoulder length hair by August. Once he does get it cut, the clippings might make for a fine bass hair jig 🤣🤣🤣

What I really use I have plenty, I have bunch of stuff I bought and never used. I need something that really pushes me to use what I have instead of just accumulating more and more junk.
