  • I've always been an early adopter of tech in bass fishing...Since back when having a sonar unit at BOTH the console and the bow was a big deal.  Vertical 'video game' fishing on greyscale 2d sonar, GP

  • This may come as a shock to some of y'all but there are thousands of bass caught daily without FFS.   Some with stringer larger than what these Pros caught.

  • In regards to this past Bassmaster Elite series tournament..

Hackney was all the way in the back of Housen', ended up in 88th with 5 for 12 - 9. Honestly I rarely fish that area because I've never done good back there.

Milliken was in one of my favorite areas, ended up in 9th with 22 - 9.

Been watching for 15 minutes and Fujita got a 4.5 and a 5.5! He’s also fishing right next to a boat lane, people are whizzing right by him haha

also walters is just a machine

  • Super User

I started watching the live coverage right when it started.  Fujita instructed the camera man not to show his livescope screen all day.  And then he put a cover on it.

That was the end of it for me.

Yeah, that's some bullcrap right there. The fans and anglers are the ones keeping these guys employed - on a stage like this it should be expected we get to see everything.

Whole lot of spotted bass showing up, it’s a wonder the LM can even survive with those wolves in the water…… (sarcasm)

schlapper has a beast, he’s thinking 10 lbs

Thought you didn’t like the screens? Covering it up should please you, no? 😂

That's a valid point.  I won't argue that one.

But I am interested in how he's catching giant bass, as are most others.

I wonder how kyoya sees it with a cover on it

schlapper weighed that fish at 8.5, although they always weigh more at the weigh in. Makes ya wonder about those catch weigh release tourney scales bouncing in waves. I guess it doesn’t matter too much when the winner has a 25 lb lead

Luke Palmer just got a big one with 2 inch bait, smaller than some crappie stuff

If you don’t like screens you can always watch the MLF tournament at Santee Cooper.  Most of them are fishing shallow cover.  Wheeler is the only one I’ve seen who is off shore.  Very interesting how different the two lakes are fishing.   Santee Cooper is much further along in the pre spawn which surprises me.

Schappler is impressive. He just shares some great wisdom on FFS.

Did anyone catch any info about the committee BASS is forming to discuss FFS? That would be interesting to hear about.

Yeah they discussed it in offseason and made no rules/restrictions . Pandora is out of the box, why limit something that helps them catch more bass and learn about their habits ? Viewership went up 11%

I’m not sure how I feel about that. As a tournament angler I would not want anyone seeing my screen, baits, etc. but these feels odd. But then again, if I were a pro angler I wouldn’t want anyone seeing anything either lol.

Schlapper out here saying unless you are scoping, you're gonna lose. Basically chatterbaits and stuff are fun but pointless in competitions.

He hasn't been casting much, trolling around looking for fish and casting to those. Idk how I feel about that

I agree to an extent and I’m more in the “if you don’t like it, don’t use it” category. I do think having too much technology takes away from the purity of the sport.

But I guess some of these discussions likely came up when 2d, gps, DI, and SI came out.
And honestly, GPS and an Ultrex is hands down the most advantageous tools I’ve ever owned.

He said in a tournament like this.  This is definitely a FFS tournament.  Not all of them are.  Right now the leader in the MLF tournament has caught all of his fish on spinnerbaits and bladed jigs.

Every single one of those elites already know that a camera is going to be in the boat if they get in the lead or are close to it.  I am on record stating that I find watching someone else watch screens during a tournament to be less than entertaining, but I still want to know how he's catching Texas sized bass (and currently leading).  Not like the rest of the elites aren't gonna figure it out or find out anyways, so what is he trying to hide here.  Part of the deal here is educating an audience.  He's currently alienating us instead.

Oh come on guys lol

We all know he just got a BR account and saw what Alex was doing on the drift fry this past winter!

Maybe at least wait till the tournament is over for the guy to spill the juice 😂😂😂😂

I agree that I want to see what he’s using, what’s going on with his screen, etc. I am just saying if I WERE HIM I wouldn’t want anyone to know either. Obviously that’s a decision that B.A.S.S. had to make.

@Pat Brown my thoughts 💯

Some camera angles ain't showing background shots.

On the BASS tournaments where they are weighing their own, the on screen weight is what the angler tells BASS the bass weighed.  He's definitely not worried about a few ounces here or there for scale accuracy like the MLF officials do.  At the same time, he might not want to tell the 'leaderboard' that a fish was 5lb and instead call it a 3.5#.  There are incentives for the most accurate person but no disincentives for putting in an inacurate weight.

Combining these two quotes into one as my response is the same for both.  While B.A.S.S. has made a pretty good living on showing tournaments on TV, the anglers are not there to teach us anything.  They have no responsibility or mandate that everything they do is televised to an at home audience.  Their goal is to win, their JOB is to win.  Competitive advantage exists at times and the more of it you have and the longer you have it, the more you will win.

B.A.S.S. could mandate that everything is viewable and that the winner has to tell everyone what he was throwing, at what depth, and how they were working it if B.A.S.S. wanted its mission to be to educate people on how to win tournaments.  They try to do that when they interview the winners and top scorers.  And for the anglers there might be some incentive to say they were using this lure or that if they used a sponsored lure that they are supposed to be promoting.  At the end of the day though, there is no requirement to do that and I certainly wouldn't either if I thought I had something up my sleeve.

Same, per above.  And, even if I didn't mind sharing what I was doing, I wouldn't put it onto B.A.S.S. video, I'd save it for my own youtube channel.

The fans aren’t the customers, the competitors are. I don’t pay them a dime, each competitor pays them about 45k dollars per year

Brent Ehler just got a 9lber on I think a white spinnerbait just a moment ago. I had both tournaments on but MLF is much more enjoyable to watch.

He caught it this morning around 10AM and they are showing it over and over.  I'm trying to watch both but Toledo has most of my attention.  There's some impressive fishing going on there.

The fans are certainly considered external customers in some form, right? I think just like any sport, you don’t want to give away your winning strategy until after you’ve won. I definitely don’t think they owe us anything but B.A.S.S. is definitely interested in what fans/viewers want to see.
