Kayak Net Storage Solutions

Featured Replies

Hey all - Was wondering about net storage on kayaks.  I got myself a YakAttack Folding Leverage net, I was wondering if anyone had any great solutions for storing a net so that it's accessible and out of the way.  I am considering getting a new piece of track, attaching that, and using another rod holder to store it.  I like the YakAttack rod holders because I can angle them low enough to be completely out of the way when casting.

I have the same net. I use a Zooka II rod holder.

I pedal a FeelFree Lure 11.5 with a milk crate and three rod holder. I mount the Zooka on the track just in front of a rear rod holder so I can grab it and keep it out of the way when I switch rods.

I’ll post a photo of it when I get a chance.

That’s what I’ve done.  Had the mighty mount there already from using yak attack rod holders there for a while. I had the spare omega holder also.

@Koz not sure if you use a net but you may know something.

I use a folding Frabill Bear Claw net when needed. It's up front in the bungee that holds my soft side cooler in place.  It's pretty rare I use it, since I'm right there at water level to land most fish - even big ones. Most often it's a dink with a face full of trebles that I don't really want to deal with. If I can get that fish to shake off boatside, even better.

Also own an old town. Keep the net in the built in rod holder on the right side...put 2 rods in the built in holders on the left and the rest of my rods on rod holders attached to a crate strapped down in the back...have found this setup works great for me and specifically like it because you can get to the net really quickly which to me is more important than being able to change over to a different rod to use...also makes it easier when you are getting in / out.

I use the ForEverlast Generation 2 net which has a short handle and store it in the left, built in rod holder behind my seat.

I like the YakAttack net the OP has, but the trade off is what he’s facing - storage and quick deployment.

Of course, I’m trading off not having a long reach with my net.

I see some anglers keep their net at their feet on the deck.

Everything is a trade off on a kayak.

This - but I keep me net on the left side.

I just lay mine across the front, especially after I used it to scoop a little bird out that was struggling on the surface.

In my PA14 mine rides on the front hatch the handle is between the pedals. I prefer having it in front of me so I can see it. I don't have to reach back blindly for the net when I am fighting a fish.

I prefer to keep mine on the front hatch of my CoosaFD, but I use a net that doesn't have as big of a hoop as the Leverage net has.  That net just seems like overkill to me.  I put a longer PVC handle with grippy tape on a medium sized hoop that had a shorter handle.

I do this on my Old Town PDL

I use the rear rod holder.. Out of my way and easy to reach when I need it..

I'm using a ForEverlast floating net. I keep mine on the bow deck of my 10' sit in while moving, all other times I'll just let it float beside the yak (leashed).

(I realize that this doesn't help the OP with his net)

I have the same Yak Attack net. I have a Hobie PA14. I put it under a bungie cord on the front storage compartment. It's out of the way and easy to get to.

net storage. I keep it simple.

I just lay it in the front like a few folks here.  it stays put all the time and I just pick it up.   my net has an extraordinary gravitation pull to a fish hook so having it up front really helps.    I use a 4everlast, that I lengthened the handle for, and that is my net for life.

I quit carrying a net.  Was in the way far more than the value I got from it.  In six or seven years of kayak fishing I only know of one tournament fish and one fun fishing bass that I might not have lost if I had used a net.

Here's my net.  It's a Yakattack net in a Yakattack holder.

Sorry for the delay.  I had lots of grown up stuff to do.

My bait would snag on that in one cast. It looks pretty solid. Can you tilt it?  I'd run it up front in my 14' boat.

The worst birds nest I’ve ever got is from snagging my net on my back cast in my kayak. It look me forever to even cut the braid off my spool.

I agree it can be more trouble than it’s worth some days but treble hooks and no net is a recipe for disaster any day. A fishing with treble hooks hanging out of its mouth flopping around on your lap is never good.

I got pretty proficient with FishGrips.  Never had a treble 'incident' in my kayak after I first bought them.  (Recent puncture wound received on my boat, notwithstanding...lol)

I used to use a YakAttack net in a Zooka II rod holder flipped around (which is made to hold the net). That works pretty well.

To save launch time, I ended up getting a Frabil Bear Claw per @J Francho's recommendation. It works great but on an Old Town, it sits around the hatch so it's not going anywhere unless I flip. (I had it pushed a little bit too far further over the hatch in this pic, but you get the idea).

That's where mine sits on my Hobie.

yup.  a net that floats helps.

@Boomstick flip that net over so the end of the handle is toward you and under the net. As a process geek, I can tell it is more efficient.  Just stick your net hand under the net to grab the handle and give it a flip to be ready to land the fish quicker.
