Best Line Strippers

Featured Replies

My old Berkley line stripper finally met the trash can and I need a new one;  preferably an upgrade.  Judging from the experience of BR members, I would like some recommendations.  Thankyou in advance.

I've been using one of these for a while.

Super basic, fast and effective.

Especially when I have several reels to strip line off.

Seems a bit over priced now, especially for what it is.

I use the same one, works great.

I save old, empty refill spools, and use a bolt through the spool into the chuck of a drill. Just use a piece of electrical tape to hold the line on and once you get a few slow turns, go for it.

I do the same. Cheap and effective.

Dang…. I must be really cheap. I use old toilet paper rolls, they slip over the chuck on my drill. Just wind it up.

I sure that works too.

btw, do you save them up or wait for one to go empty ?

I use an electric drill.  I put enough duct tape around a drill bit to make a plastic soda bottle fit tight over the tape.  Then simply attach the line to the bottle and remove the line as fast as the drill will spin.  When I'm taking a few hundred yards off of a big game reel, I drill a hole in the other end of the bottle, and put a pencil in the other end, so I can hold the drill in one hand and the pencil in the other, making the bottle more stable, and allowing me to spread the line evenly on the bottle.  For smaller reels this is not necessary.  Being as I'm an incurable hoarder, I save the bottles with the line wrapped on them for later use.  Later will never come, but I will be ready if it does.

Whatever I have laying around. I use empty Diet Coke bottles with a bolt through the top generally…I have an issue with Diet Coke.

I just use a half inch drill bit. Chuck it with the cutting blades in the chuck (aka backwards).  Very loosely wind it and no spool tension on the reel. After you finish stripping off the reel and cut the line, reverse the drive and hold your hand on the line for a minute on low speed to loosen the line. It slips off the end of the bit and into the next.

This got me to thinking. I wonder if there’s a 3d model out there I could print. There is. I’m going to print one and see how I like it. I may design a different one too, have some thoughts pouring through my head…

I bought this combo off Amazon. Works great for spooling and de-spooling with an electric drill. I use old empty spools to remove the line.

If only I was handy :) nicely done by the way. I used to use the old Amazon box and pencil trick.

One or other of these is going to get sent to my 3d printer...

Like others I DIY.  An off cut of 2*4 with a wood screw drilled in the center of the end grain.

Pro Tip: there is enough space behind the chuck of most hand drills to fit the head of a screw.  As long as you use a long enough screw, this allows you to get a good grip on the shaft.
