What is this soft plastic and how do I use it?

I was gifted some lures by one of our kind members, and there is a bag of these. They are in an unlabeled Yamamoto bag, which might mean something or not.

Thanks all for the help.

Thanks! I searched on Yamamoto's website and didn't find it.

Poop bait? That's a new term for me. A quick google search shows it's a thing. Ought to be interesting to learn about those and give them a try.

I haven't tried them but my understanding is just cast and let it fall on an EWG or screwlock hook. I've seen some locals add a punch skirt for a little more action.

I am an "expert" poop fisherman..it's one of my primary techniques.

It's quite simple to fish. This is typically fished weightless.

-Put an EWG hook in. (Though the smaller size also works well used as a Ned bait too! )

-Cast along edges and in weeds, cover, docks, etc

-Allow to sink to bottom. Wait 3-10 seconds.

-Give it two firm, swift jerks to get it off the bottom.

-Let it sink back to bottom and repeat the process.

Yamatanuki in baby bass color.  I use an Owner 4/0 screw lock hook and 12 lb Floro. I pitch them just like a jig. They fall faster than a Senko and provide a more erratic motion when you lift and drop.  It’s a fun bait to fish.

Reason(s) to fish with poop over a senko?

Both are good, but a scat lure will fall faster to the bottom and you can drag/pop it along the bottom and cover the lower half of the column quicker.

Does this immitate goose droppings?

I have often speculated that bass eat goose and duck scat.

Agreed. But there's also so much more.

Since they are compact, you can cast them a mile. This is a big plus for shore fisherman. In the boat, I can cast to areas I might otherwise not be able to reach. These also skip far superior to a Senko. I can put on a skipping clinic using my spinning rod with these! In the included photo, I can skip the poop from where that gentleman is sitting near his boat all the way across the channel to the open boat slip and under the far wall of the dock. With accuracy. That opens up options.

You can also walk the dog...near surface, underwater and in cover..like an underwater walking frog, I guess. There's even a specialized poop for this called the Spin Nuts, though the Cover Scat I favor does it just fine with some practice.

And I think it's a different look..which may or may not be important to you depending on how pressured your water is. I stick to 3" or so sizes. I think they vibrate in the water differently. Partly due to size and partly due to their high density. In particular the "Mushi" versions with their many appendages. The HideUp Coike Shrimp (Top) and Issei Shizumi Mushi (2nd from Top) flat out vibrate, almost looking like the appendages are buzzing, such is the vibrating frequency speed.

I still love the Deps Cover Scat (3rd from Top) and is my most thrown poop. This is where my love of these baits started.

And the bottom? The Issei AK Punch is likely the most unique bait I've ever thrown. On the pull, it vibrates harder than ANY plastic I've ever used..and harder than some hardbaits!! Then when it falls, it backslide harder and farther than ANY plastic. It backsides so hard, the line looks just like a fish has taken the bait and is swimming away!  I had to re program my brain a bit when fishing this one. When crawling on the bottom, I can just feel everything as the large surface area of the "sack" just seems to transmit everything to my rod. Please look at some underwater videos to fully grasp how unique this bait is.

So yea...I love this type of bait and technique. And yes, this is viewed as a technique itself rather than just a bait selection by those in Japan. I tend to agree. There's no real name for it but I have heard it referred to as "HDD" for High Density Dragging.

Get out there and try that new bait! You'll see they're really fun to fish..and productive too!

Please report back after some fishing.

I'm thinking it might just be the ticket at the heavily pressured city lake I fish. Some good distance and something they probably ain't ever seen before.

Lol.  I think Deps just wanted a faster sinking do-nothing bait, and someone on the design team probably commented that it looked like a turd.  And it does

Research has shown that bass will eat a crawfish with no claws before a crawfish with one or two claws.

Hence the design.

This is why the Rebel craw lures are so effective.

I often wonder if I’ll notice when the sport of bass fishing begins to pass me by. Now that people are catching bass on poop and fuzzy dice, I’d say that day may be coming sooner than I’d thought.

Yeah I catch bass good on trick worms and stick baits but I did buy some poop baits and they worked about the same but more expensive.

Nail weight a stick bait and you're pretty close to 99% of poop baiting.

I ordered 2 packs to put on ned rigs.  Didn't check the size before I ordered and they were the large- a solid 1/2 oz chunk of plastic.  I rigged one up the other day when nothing else was working on the lake and was reminded why I don't like a wacky rig or anything else that you basically deadstick.  Just not my style.  That said, it casts like a plopper which is to say as far as you want with no real effort.

I did reorder the smaller ones (3.5" I think) and I think they are going to be great on a ned head.  The thick end down and the little tail up looks good.

Sorry I’m a little late to the party but as has been said, the bait is a Yamamoto Yamatanuki.  It comes in 3 sizes and can be fished on everything from a Ned to weightless depending on size.  This bait was only available to the overseas market before GSM decided to release it here.  It is a worthwhile addition to your plastic selection.  While it may be hard to find at some outlets, tackle warehouse I’m sure offers them or you can go directly to baits.com and see the sizes and colors.

The Bait Monkey has been my financial adviser, accountant, banker, and relationship canceller most of my life.  He has had more influence over me than any teacher or boss ever has, but if he tries to get me to buy a piece of plastic called a poop bait, I will have to draw the line in the sand.  Unless of course my fishing buddy buys some first and makes me look like an outdated fool, while he lands DD with them.

I don't need any help from the bait monkey. A comment that has both "poop bait" and "DD" in it is all the coaxing I need.

i am a poop expert.  (that could have come out better)

why i like it.  it casts like a dream weightless.   i skips better than anything.   i tend to attract the bigger bass (3.5" size?).  i like the thump i get fishing it.

it is different that a slowly sinking stick bait.  just something new.

i am 0% on the fuzzy dice.  0.0%
