$50 Casting Rod, whats out there?

What is everyone's favorite rod for around $50?

Diawa Aird-X is highly regarded, I'm about to find out what all the fuss is about. I have a Lew's Hank Parker Speed Stick that's a decent rod, and a BPS Graphite Series that is growing on me.

What else is there that's at this price point? I can't think of any others right off hand.

Around $50?  The Dobyns Mavericks can be found in 55-58 dollar range on Amazon.  Check your couch for loose change.  This series is rock solid.

Dang, thanks @Columbia Craw!

A little more than $50 but Abu Garcia Vengence rods have become my favorites. I have them for both casting and spinning. JMHO.

One of the first rods I bought when getting back into fishing was a Wright & McGill pro insight advantage rod from Walmart. Although they changed the reel seat which I’m not nuts about I think judging by what you describe in other posts I think you would be pleased with the blank overall. IMG_0951.jpeg.c50791cee1d4dd69132e6edb20c425fc.jpegIMG_0950.jpeg.fb77a547954fd7ce9563bb913d6263e0.jpegIMG_0669.jpeg.7be9aef2d15b92f22e2c3ecda704e37b.jpegIMG_5357.png.bc8b7537d075c1def2c44df2f5bbbcc3.pngHere’s a few photos of mine vs the newest version. Sorry the photos aren’t great. I should also add my version and I do believe the new version which I did hold in my local store both have micro guides which you may not like I’m not sure about but it’s definitely a great budget rod in my opinion.

Might search the flea markets, FB market place, Ebay.  Garage sales and pawn shops might have some great finds. I'd bet you can probably find a good rod used. FloridaFishingFool does very well at it per his posts.  Side note to that is he lives in Florida where there is a ton of fishing and lots of old people dying or not being able to fish anymore.

Both are DSG rods but for me the Lew's Carbon Fire and Dobyn's Frenzy seemed like they were very good quality for the price. A little more than $50 at list price but if you wait for something like black friday you can usually find a good deal on one.

I have an Arid-X spinning rod that I really like…keep an eye on Dobyns on Amazon. Seems like they always have something on stupid low clearance. Keep an eye on the sale thread as well, because once one of those stupid good deals come up, it will be posted about on here for everyone to take advantage of.

on a side/related note, I appreciate that people here post the stupid good deals rather than post after the fact gloating. Good on us BR Members…

The 705CB is only 62 bucks right now, and you were just talking about getting a dedicated rattletrap rod.....

Shipping cost kill any chance to get a decent $50 casting rod on line.

Go into the big box stores and pick out a rod that feels good to you. Good time to get clearance rods!

Tom

Be first in line at garage and estate sales;  the good ones are gone in a hurry.  Otherwise, Walmart.

Those Dobyns rods on Amazon have free shipping.

I checked out the Maverick Series in the store today. Course, they are $100 in store.

13 has some really great budget rods. Defy black @$60 and the new Jynx @$70

Okuma has a really nice one.  By feel it's on par with the Aird X in terms of build quality, weight and the components were a little higher quality.  I just can't remember the name.

The Dobyns Frenzy, a DSG exclusive rod really impressed me.  I really like Dobyns approach to blank, how they classify them and most of all BALANCE.  The lightest rod in the world would fish like crap if it's not balanced.  I was really impressed with the Frenzy's feel and weight.  I don't know if its the full cork handle or what, but it felt considerably better than Colt, Maverick and even Fury. I think they run $80, but if it performs anything like I think it would, its a winner for sure.

Ark makes an outstanding budget rod.  I think there are rods with better build quality and definitely better components, but Ark scores high for the blanks they use.  36T toray blank rods <$100 are very rare, much less $60.  One great thing about Ark is that they are like perpetually on sale.  I think right now, you can get...

2 Invoker Limiteds (retail $250) for $300

2 Invoker tours(retail $180) for $240

3 previous gen Catalyzers(retail $60) for $100

They only make a few models in the casting line, but they're versatile blanks.

Hear me out - the ozark trail rods from Walmart that cost 35$ are really really good rods.  I am still using the one I bought in 2020 and many many more expensive rods have died since 2020 - ozark stands strong.  It’s sensitive and light and the guides aren’t complete trash.  The reel seat isn’t complete trash.  Cork composite grips.

@Pat Brown I don’t know if you’re familiar with the older Field & Stream rods DSG used to carry but those Ozark Trail rods remind me of them but at a cheaper price.

They just came out with a 7’ medium heavy fast and I’m getting them for everyone in the family this Christmas for cheap frog rods for our backyard!

The Bass doesn't care what you spend on a rod. I've seen many a bass landed with a Shakespeare rod.

Good Fishing

Kastking has some different models of casting rods that will come close to your price range.

I have 3 also & love them. Bought one, then after month of fishing it, bought 2 more.

I’m not a big rod snob & tend to spend more on my reels, cause I tend to occasionally break rods from abuse, lack of care, etc. But to me, these rods feel better than some of my more expensive rods around $100 or more (that I only buy when on sale).

Mine were only $50 when I bought them earlier this yr at Academy. I see they’re $60 now. ☹️ Think mine are all 7’3” MH. Work great for throwing frogs, swimming toads, weightless flukes, t rigs, hollow bodied swimbaits, etc. Only thing I haven’t tried is treble hooked baits. But think they’d work well for those too. The 7’3” model I have has good backbone with a nice flex at tip. The 7’ MH seemed a little too stiff at tip & maybe better suited for jigs & heavier baits.

I haven't gotten the Aird-X that I purchased yet, but after checking them out in the store again, I do like the feel of them.

For that matter I still like the feel of the Laguna series. It doesn't appear to be cheap or junk, as it's been said that they are. I come very close to buying one yesterday, but held off.

I also have the 7-3 model.....and they work great for crankbaits.  they seem to have a slower tip but plenty of backbone when setting the hook.
