Favorite or best wakebaits

Featured Replies

Whatcha got? I always seem to do better on walking baits and poppers but I enjoy the ease of the cast and wind fishing wakebaits.

My #1 is a Deps buzzjet. I have a bunch of others but none have been as productive as the Deps. Especially for big fish.

I have the duo ones, wasn’t a fan.

I also have done well on the baby 1- but only have one that I don’t really throw and just keep for nostalgia.

Megabass griffon zero is a good one but primarily a numbers bait. Not sure if they still make it? Bought a bunch from Ichiban tackle years ago.

Evergreen CH1 is a bait I’ve been curious about. Teckel just released a new wake modeled after the old bandit footloose.

Haven't had much of a chance to fish it. Now that you mentioned it I did pick up one of those Evergreen cranks in bone.

I always have at least one wake bait tied on; hands down favorite is the Berkley Wake Bull which was discontinued a couple years ago. I still have 4 in different colors, but my favorite lost it's bill to a rock only recently; sad day, it served me well. I have two boxes of wake baits, but the Wake Bull is number 1.

OSP Daibuzzin Heavy Hitter and Co Buzzin, Megbass ORC, and an old discontinued Lucky Craft bait, I think it's called the LC CB-50 DRS. If you can find one, there is nothing else like it. It has that one knocker sound that drives fish crazy.

I almost mentioned the OSP heavy hitter, have caught decent fish on it just haven’t thrown it enough. I have the Megabass orc but never really did too well with it.

Have you tried fishing the ORC on a slow stop and go retrieve? I found that if fish it quick, fish seem to run away from it.

My current favorite is a Bass Mafia Hitman in Citrus Shad. It’s been getting pretty beat up this year.

Strike King makes a shallow running 2.5 Wake Bait and a similar offering from Academy Sports own brand. BPS The Egg , Cotten Cordell Red Fin and the Rapala BX Balda Waking Minnow all produce bass. I will also use the Rapala original floating minnow and a Strike King shallow running 1.5 with my rod tip held high to produce similar results.

I like the Jackall Riser Bait 012 (4.7", 1 1/8 oz), and the Cotton Cordell Ripplin' Riser Red Fin Wakebaits (4.5", 7/16 oz, 0-3 ft).

The ol' Cordell jointed redfin. Some wake great but some never will. My method is 2 suspend dots in front of the joint for starters and a feathered treble on the back.

Some guys like to heat the Bill with a lighter and bend it down, Personally , I've put a couple in the trash behind that method.

If you can get one in chrome or smokey Joe that wake right they are magic.

BPS’s the egg……… Mann’s was my favorite, wonder why they discontinued it?

The Mann's are pretty easy to find on the auction site. Even the original double stamps don't bring much so they are still affordable.

Those OSP baits are the Buzzin heavy hitter, not the Daibuzzin fyi. The daibuzzin is slightly larger at 1/2oz. How do you like those? Was thinking about grabbing one.

Storm subwart. Discontinued when rapala bought out storm years ago. Thanks again, rapala.

I've still got 5 of them in a tackle box and 1 unopened. The 2 inch versions are insanely priced on eBay.

I primarily used them on a mid sized river for smallmouth in the summer time but those days are over here.

The injection molded (abs) shellcrackers are awesome. I think they stopped making them though?

Based on the ebay prices I think you may be right and I am retiring tomorrow!

I have 3 or 4 of them, but when I’m throwing bigger wakes I prefer the garage built stuff. Personal favorite is the toxic Wade Hoggs and whippersnapper. But that falls into the swimbait category for me vs traditional wakebait.

You are of course correct...but my reply was more of a "in the family" type of thing. The entire family is great, IMO.

I REALLY like these! They are more compact and shockingly loud...they can be heard a long ways away! Really easy to cast and fish. And you could throw them in a Light rod if needed (I do! ).

So yea..I like them!!

Do they cast any better than the daibuzzin heavy hitter? It spins a lot especially if there is any wind.
