Favorite or best wakebaits

Featured Replies

BPS Egg, Strike King Hybrid Hunters, and the Jackall Riser are all in the starting line up for wakebaits. I have a new BPS Wake Up Call that one of the kids got me for XMas that is trying out for the team. The Hybrid Hunters have gotten in the game most though because they are duel role lures.

I always have at least one wake bait tied on; hands down favorite is the Berkley Wake Bull which was discontinued a couple years ago. I still have 4 in different colors, but my favorite lost it's bill to a rock only recently; sad day, it served me well. I have two boxes of wake baits, but the Wake Bull is number 1.

I only have 2 of them, and I broke one a few weeks ago. I almost cried.. Berkley really needs to start making them again.

A close second is the Jackall Mikey.

The DEPS Buzz Jet Jr. is the wake bait that has caught the biggest fish for me - I like the OSP Buzzin and CO-Buzzin, they are fun to use - I recently purchased a Megabass ORC Burning Shad but have not used it yet

How are you fishing that buzz jet jr? Just a slow steady retrieve or do you work in any pops, twitches or pulls?

Storm subwart. Discontinued when rapala bought out storm years ago. Thanks again, rapala.

I've still got 5 of them in a tackle box and 1 unopened. The 2 inch versions are insanely priced on eBay.

I primarily used them on a mid sized river for smallmouth in the summer time but those days are over here.

Good point to remember : If you have proven success with a hard bait of soft plastic - buy some to havd in reserve as you never know when they will get discontinued !

I still have 2 of them from my wade fishing days and guard them carefully. I remember climbing an overhanging thorn tree to retrieve one; another time one was saved by a Northern Pike getting it lodged up and down in it's mouth, preventing it from being able to close down and cut the 4# line.

Do they cast any better than the daibuzzin heavy hitter? It spins a lot especially if there is any wind.

I don't have any problem casting them. But I'm on spinning.

They are designed with a slow retrieve in mind...so that's what I do.

Ordered a couple of the new Teckel liltanker’s that are modeled after the old bandit footloose.

I dont have a true wake bait. I have used Bomber Model A's, and big Colorado bladed spinnerbaits to make a wake. The largest spotted bass I ever caught was on a Rebel Popper, dont know the name but twice the size of a Pop R. I reeled it in steadily, just under the surface. It had a tight little wiggle and put out a nice wake. Retrieved it by a standing timber tree and the bass nailed it. If I remember correctly, thats the only one I caught like that.

The Heddon Moss Boss 1/4oz and 3/8oz is not considered a true wake bait. I get it. But casting it in wooded areas and close to the bank you're fishing, a steady slow retrieve does create a small wake if you want it to. Mostly small waters.

Good Fishing

@Jerkbait22 - For the Buzz Jet Jr. I just use a slow steady retrieve the majority of the time or every now and then with an occasional pause in the retrieve, but when I begin the retrieve again I do it slowly so it is not a hard jerk/fast start, just slow/steady/pause/slow/steady/pause - my best success with it has come from casting it parallel to an above water grass/weed line or casting it to the above water grass/reeds and slowly retrieving it away from that grass/weed line - I have gotten some really explosive bites using the Buzz Jet Jr. in that manner

**I also just ordered two of the new Teckle LilTanker and look forward to trying them out

Where did you recently purchase the ORC Burning Shad? I've been looking for them, but only find out of stocks with no indication if they will again be available.

Three Rivers Rackle has some ORC .

Megabass ORC (Over Rev Crank) Wakebait

@Tackleholic - I purchased the Megabass Over Rev Crank - Burning Shad (the Burning Shad is smaller than the regular Over Rev Crank) from 7Palms lure shop (Japan) - as @BassinBrett has posted it looks like the regular Over Rev Crank is at Three Rivers Tackle - the only place I have seen the ORC-Burning Shad is thru Japanese shops

What colors liltanker did you get? I got bone and bluegill. I just heard they said they are a week behind on orders so hopefully get it this coming week.

I fish the buzzjets (both sizes) in similar places - have had the best luck over submerged weedbeds.

One retrieve to try with the jr which has worked well for me in open water especially for smallmouth is to rip it (long hard pull) and then long pause and rip it again. If you can get the pull just right to where it stays on or near the surface, the blade on the back will throw a ton of water and it calls fish in from a distance.

Liltanker colors I ordered are Copper Shad, Matte Black, and Matte Chartruse; also ordered 2 of the Over Rev.

The original BPS Egg, Storm Sub-wart, and Mann's Baby one minus. All are discontinued so I am careful where I fish them. I have been trying out the shallow running Hybrid Hunter to see how it compares.

The discontinuted Berkley Surge Shad and jointed Surge Shad are my favorite standard wakes.

Big wakes are some of my favorite in the swimbait category and I'm a really big fan of the BioLab Wake Shad 6", MS Slammer, and Bull Wake.

@Jerkbait22 @Tackleholic

I ordered the Teckle LilTanker in Blue Gill and in Matte Black - from *** - on sale for $16 each I felt it was worth it to give them a try since this is a technique I enjoy - and I found a video on YT from the owner/designer from Teckle talking about his design process, how an old (discontinued) wake bait he loved to use was the inspiration for building this one - I found it interesting - many of the Japanese lure makers are true craftsmen, artists, take tremendous pride in their work - not out to make the most $$ but to truly create/design/manufacture a high quality/fish catching lure (as an FYI, the video is in Japanese, with subtitles and is a bit long)

Good choices, I've caught fish on all.

Yes I watched that video too. He makes good baits. The Kicknocker is awesome (walking topwater) if you don’t have one.
