  1. Nothing strange about that. It is bomb proof.
  2. I've owned the following crankbait reels: Shimano Curado 200DPV 5.0:1 - sold Abu Garcia Revo Winch 5.4:1 - sold Team Daiwa Zillion High Power 4.9:1 - still own The Curado would cast light baits down to a 1/4 oz very well. It cast heavier baits well. The Revo Winch did not handle baits under 1/2 oz as well as the Curado, but cast baits over 1/2 oz as well, or better. The heavier they were, the better the Winch threw them over the Curado. The Zillion cast light baits as well as the Curado, and heavy baits as well as the Revo Winch. I rate them like this: 1) Zillion - Best all round performer, smooth as butter, built like a beast. Also the most expensive. 2) Curado - Heavy bait performance was good, but light bait performance makes it a better all-round choice than the Revo Winch. You can still find these new in stores and on line, sometimes for less than $100. 3) Revo Winch - I just couldn't get great distance with lighter cranks. The heavier the better with this reel, IMO. If all you are throwing is DD22s and heavier, or need a swimbait reel, this reel is a good choice. Cost more than the Curado and less than the Zillion.
  3. Sounds a bit embellished to me : :) ;D

That's a hella-nice bass! Is that Waller Mill Reservoir?
  6. How about when you are backing out of a parking space. You are almost all the way out and some idiot tries to squeeze between the rear of your car and some other car you are backing towards. Morons.
  7. That part is plastic in the Curado, too. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1224097297/0#0 No, the yoke posts on a Curado are metal. Ok, I misread what he said. I didn't see the "posts" part. Was assuming the "U" part broke. Ok, I agree. Buy the Curado. No wait, are you sure those posts are plastic on the JM? They are metal on the Revo and the JM is very close. At any rate, if you want the best build quality, skip the JM, Revo and Curado and get a Zillion. They are built like swiss watches. And they are beefy inside.
  8. I broke my Gills a little over 2 weeks ago. That's like 5 pairs of relatively expensive sunglasses I've crushed in as many years. I'm done with expensive sunglasses. Went into BPS afterwards determined to buy something off the racks instead of out of one of the glass cases. I settled on these... http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10208032_100015000_100000000_100015000_100-15-0 I got the pair with the amber-to-brown lenses. All I can say is WOW! These rock for $39.99. The lenses are photochromatic. The get really light in low light and really dark in bright light. So far, the tinting always seems to be about right for me. I haven't found myself wanting more or less tinting at any given time. I'm wearing them a lot. They even make my eyes feel good sitting in front of a bright computer monitor. And I'm wearing them in the evening while driving. The contrast with the amber lenses is fantastic. The lenses are as distorition free as any expensive glasses I've owned. So no eye strain. The glasses are light. Even better, they fit my big, full face with no problem. I think I'm going to buy a few more pairs. A pair for my car and truck, and a pair for backup. ---Recommended.

  10. In 757, I only fish two... Lee Hall Reservoir, Newport News Park. Fish the west part of the reservoir. You have to go underneath the Rt143 and I-64 overpass. Not huge number of bass, but it is producing some big, quality bass. Little Creek Reservoir, James City County. This is a deep, very clear lake. If its bright and sunny, crank deep, or fish tight around blowdowns. If overcast, fish the coves. This liake is producing some big bass, as well. Otherwise, I move west to 804 and fish Chick River and Lake, and Diascund.
  11. Hookers is a good place to visit. I wish Darryl would get in some more Jackall lures. He's been sitting on the same stock forever. He has gotten some Imas in, which I like.
  12. Next summer you won't get hardly any.
  13. The two across from each other are "on." They are free to slide up and down the shafts. The other four are "off." Locked down. To turn a brake "off," push it down towards the hub until it clicks. It may take a bit of fingernail force to do this. To turn a brake on, click it up from its locked position. Again, it may take a bit of fingernail force to do this. Your reel isn't broken. It sound like it's just fine.
  14. Nearly a month old, but first I've heard of it... Caught near Dutch Gap on the James River. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2009/05/102pound-blue-catfish-caught-in-virginia-may-be-new-state-record.html
  15. You live in Virginia Beach? Understand that a lot of what you have that looks like brackish, and what people say is brackish, is actually hard salt water. You won't find many, if any, LMB in the vast majority of "brackish" creeks in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake etc. Back Bay is a notable exception, but that body is connected to the sea way down in North Carolina. Tidal water in Virginia doesn't start really becoming fresh until you move up the James River past Hog Island. Even then, the salt water influence can be too great for bass unless you fish the very backs of creeks. Fishing can be very poor. As far as I know, in our area, the best brackish waters for bass is the Chickahominy River system and upper lower James (the section of the James River between the mouth of Chickahominy and the fall line in Richmond). Even in those systems, which are nationally recognized for their LMB fisheries, salt water influence can play havok on bass stocks and fishing in some years. Lots of rain will keep them fresh. In the later summer and early fall, when there isn't much rain, they can become rather salty. I've caught speckled trout and croaker in the same waters I've caught LMB under those conditions. So, yes, LMB do inhabit brackish water. But in Virginia, you are going to have to seek out true brackish water - because salt water goes way inland in Virginia. I fish the Chick River a lot, all year, even when the salt moves in. It can be very challenging fishing. If you haven't done so, peruse this site. Read the biologist reports. They will give you a good idea where tidal bass fishing is best. http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/waterbodies/?type=2&region=1
  16. This is your fault. Shimanos don't backlash. Haven't you heard? Seriously though, check to make sure the brakes you want on are really on and moving freeling on their shafts. Make sure the ones you want off are really off. Make sure the inside of the ring in the sideplate that those brakes make contact in is clean and dry of oil. Take a q-tip and wipe it clean. Then make sure you spool tension knob is set so that your lure falls slowly but when it hits the ground your spools does not keep spinning.
  17. That 2500 Tierra, if that's what you already have, is one helluva sweet reel. If you want to move "up", have you considered the TD Advantage? No quite as expensive as the Fuego or Sol, but darn nice reel.
  18. Never had a problem with USPS. I've sold reels, lures, books, etc, all shipped by USPS. It was cheap, fast and the tracking #s all worked.
  19. He can haggle prices, or he can sit on them 'til they fossilize. Pride doesn't pay bills. And "worth" is a relative term. If it won't sell for his asking price, that's not its worth to a buyer.
  20. I don't think the owner knows what a computer is. And this store is known for high prices. It's been around longer than I can remember. It has a loyal following in my area - of old folks who just just won't go anywhere else. When I was there, there was one guy behind the counter putting a tip on an old beat up rod for an old customer. He charged $20. That guy could have replaced that beater rod for $35 at Bass Pro, which is just a few miles away. That's the way it is there. An old store run by old men who are stuck in time. I doubt I'll be able to convince the owner to give me a better price. He'll probably be content to sit on those reels until he dies instead of taking what he paid for them.
  21. I just went up there to see what they wanted for them and what I could get them for. They have 5 NIB Curado Bs. All 200s it looks like. They have 2 SFs in 6.2:1, 1 deep spool in 6.2:1, 1 deep spool in 5.0:1 and 1 deep spool in 3.8:1. I'm interested in the SFs and the 3.8:1 deep spool. Sticker prices on the SFs are $179 and sticker on the deep spools are $129. I ask the fellow at the counter if the owner was in. Of course, he wasn't. But the manager was. He agreed to knock $10 off any reel I wanted. I told him the price on the SFs is $30 higher than the MSRP 5+ years ago, and even with $10 off is was $20 higher. The price on the deep spools are likewise too high. I offered $100 for the SFs and $79 for the deep spools. He called me a "highway robber." I chuckled and told him these reels had been sitting around for years - unsold. He told me the owner paid $119 for the SFs and $99 for deep spools. He had to make a profit. I countered that he paid that 5+ years ago and hasn't sold them. He can sell them and recoup something on his purchase, or he can sit on them for many more years and make squat. He told me to come back on Monday and talk to the owner, but warned me he was "tight." Anyways, that's where it stands. BTW, is the 3.8:1 reel a good buy at $119 (which is what he told me he would sell it for)? The reels are in perfect condition - all papers, clean boxes.
  22. I saw several this morning. One had the deep spool, others had the ported spool. I know one had 5:1 on the front near the Bantam roding, and the others had boxes saying 6.?:1. They were sitting in an old glass case along with a bunch of older Abu round reels.
  23. I found a local store that still has some new in the box that never sold. Just sitting there beside newer models that seems to be selling well. Does anyone remember the MSRP of the of Curado B? IIRC, the Curado B MSRP was $109, and the SF version was $129 (that's the sticker price on them)? Does that sound right? There are a couple of SFs in, I think, 6.3:1 and some in 5:1, which I don't think are super frees. I sure as heck won't offer the sticker price. What do you think a fair offer would be for these reels?
  24. There is no practical performance difference between the S and SX and STX. However, if you really try, you might be able to squeeze a wee bit more distance out of the SX, and a wee bit further with the STX. Otherwise, on the water, its all about the same. Just comes down to they type of braking system you like, color bearings numbers, etc.
  25. Inasmuch as fishing diverts my mind, time and attention from the things that bring me stress, then yes.
