  1. I am one of the very few but I use Gamma Copoly 25 lb. I fish in heavy cover & braid does not have the abrasion resistance as this line does. It's breaking strength is 42 lbs & it's less than $40 for 600 yds. I just make sure my hooks are sharpe & go fishing. my hook up ratio is good but my problem is sometime I react to soon on the blow up. • Higher breaking strength (up to 2x the stated size) • Casts longer with accuracy • More natural presentations • Supple and abrasion resistant • Low coil memory
  2. I agree with Catt's statement that some fish live shallow & some live deeper year around. I have caught Bass from 1 to 5 feet in January & February in & around tree roots mid day where the sun has been shining.
  3. To expound on Tom's remark on the Dobyns Rods site & check these out. http://dobynsrods.com/store/#!/Refurbished-Champion-Series/c/14031090/offset=0&sort=normal But look under the Fury & Sierra Series. You will find some good deals there. Good Luck.
  4. I agree with Tom. I caught my P/B during prespawn.
  5. What you are looking for is a rod that requires 2 different actions. The baits are fished in different types of cover. Frogs are usually found in & around heavy cover where you need a different type of rod blank & power to set a different style of hooks & power to get the fish out of the cover. When fishing a crank bait you use lighter line so the rod blank needs more forgiveness to keep the fish buttoned up. If you know someone that designs rod blanks they can explain much better then I did. While looking around on the net I found that Dobyns Rods described what each rod was best suited for. I still wanted a little more info So I called the company & having a pair of brass ones I ask to speak to Gary Dobyns & told the girl what I wanted & he spoke with me. I have discovered they do have a few other people that answer questions. After he helped me I purchased a Dobyns rod to see if what he had to was a sales pitch. The rod was just what I was looking for, now every time I want a new rod I call or e-mail Gary tell what I am looking for & I get the rod he suggests & it has always been spot on. One can figure out I am a big Dobyns fan. I in no way work for the company the only thing I have to do with the company is that I buy their rods. There service is amazing they are very helpful. Gary told me that loves to talk to people about rods. I have 14 of there rods & spoke to him each time unless I was buying another of the same rod.
  6. If you think it's a problem why not tie both knots in the center of the spool.
  7. I have the Japanese version( Bantam MGL-18). It's the XG model, Shimano has hit a home run with this reel, it is a tank. I 100% agree with Dwight Hottle had to say about this reel, it's just a superior reel. I have mine mounted on a Dobyns Champion XP DC 735C FH for bottom fishing. I think this reel will also make a excellent reel for frog fishing as it has a 1 piece frame. This reel really shines & I can see another one in my future.
  8. Why not use a Pocket Knocker Lure Retriever, they work.
  9. I have one but have not used it a whole lot yet as I have not had very long. Like matbellon3 I use it for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits but am using 16# Sunline Shooter. Like matbellon3 I bought it for the I-DC5 system for the same reasons he did. But have read that that system is tuned to the way the Japanese cast & the I-DC4 for the way we do & read some complaints about it( I think I read that on Tackle Tour). I have not a problem with the reel at all & cast it like I do my other reels. I do not have the Curado DC so I can not compare them. So far I am very satisfied with it but I guess time will tell.
  10. I have 3 Chronarch CH 101 D7's super tuned that are buttery smooth & A Japanese Version of the Bantam MGL & I don't notice a difference between them. I think you did just fine with your choice of a reel.
  11. In Case I was misunderstood My Garmin unit has GPS & a Depth finder incorporated in it But is called a Chartplotter. My trolling motor has the break away feature to prevent bent shafts.
  12. Depending on the depth I trim way up OR shut the big engine off & trim it up out of the water . Then use the trolling motor & stand so I can see in the water & maneuver around all I can. I also carry a push pole & have my chartplotter mapping a trail so it is easier going out. I fish a couple of coves like this & once you a trail marked for that cove you just have to keep track of the water depth. It gets shallower it's back to the T/M.
  13. There are many good answers here. Time on the water will get you there.
  14. With out a doubt I am with Catt on this one but with a small change. I do not work anymore as I am retired And expect my cardiologist give me the ok to get back in the boat next week.
  15. I also chose a 6'8" because there was no 6'6" choice
  16. I too think Co-Polymer is about the best all purpose line. Right now I am trying the Sufix Advance to see what it has.

On the Potomac I am with you on the heavy mono. I did switch to copoly which I still use today while frog fishing. I like a little bit of stretch on a hook set. I feel it helps protect my rod tips some.
  18. I have several of those lure retrievers. Woo Daves was promoting them. They do work great.
  19. I use 2, 5' 6" older Shimano rods with pistol grip handles that I have had since the mid 70's. They work well for me.
  20. Vintage = older than dirt. Flatrock, I have 2 of those reels that I bought back in the mid 70's.
  21. I have & use a Dobyns Champion XP DC735c & DC736c These are both excellent rods for frogging. You did not mention budget but I see where you ask about the Fury 735. I do not have this rod but the reviews are very good So I bet you cant go wrong.
  22. I have & use a Bantam mgl (Japanese version ) purchased from Digitaka for under $300. This is well built reel & I recommend you look into this reel before deciding on a reel. I also have the Metanium mgl that was also purchased from Digitaka. Both reel are excellent reels but for you want to use it for I would go with the Bantam mgl.
  23. I have been in South Carolina since 1969 & don't plan on leaving. I fish 12 months a year. Between Santee Cooper Lakes & the Cooper River there is plenty of bass fishing. Plus the economy is booming. There are plenty of other lakes in the state that provide good fishing too.
  24. The Bantam mgl is the way to go just check out the frame construction. I purchased the Japanese Bantam mgl for it was $85 + cheaper.
