Shimano has become lazy on baitcast development while Daiwa just continues to smoke them, particularly in gear design and spool development, even the clutch has become much improved.I’m interested in the Vanquish, but I’m pretty content with my Stradic’s & Vanford.

@Eric 26 My number 1 fish catcher from 74-79 (crappie jig) close behind is a black jitterbug & Bagley B2. Then came the Plastic worm in about 80..

OP, here’s another link on the “new” Tatula 100. Remember, this reel has been around for a decade, but the aforementioned thread speaks on the latest Tat 100.

I look very casually, most of my older gear was gifted. My son has never had to think about higher end gear, and nephews and BoyScouts. Plus money talks and I’ve flipped older gear & same with baits. Heck I’ll sell you any rod or reel I got if you’re paying real well.. 😉🙂🤣 but I’m looking at a couple treasures and I believe eventually it will show up somewhere..

If it’s a Hyper-Drive reel it’s an aluminum side plate.

I’ve seen the shiner guys throwing chicken feed to prep the water before launching the cast net. (Orange-Lochloosa) On the St. John’s river when the shrimp run was happening, on the piers, people would toss out bait balls to chum for shrimp.. Same river with chicken feed for mullet..

I like Co-poly & FC lines. I’m well versed on its difficulties, but around here ,line takes a beating and you’ll need to change rather often. No worries, I have a lifetime of practice😉 A couple things, in all my years on here I’ve never once heard a complaint about mono lifespan in brackish or saltwater. Mono should be changed about every 2-3 days depending on how much water/sunlight it’s endured. It simply changes and dramatically.. mono does absorb water/chemicals etc. and the intense UVA & UVB Rays from sunlight will weaken it very quickly. One advantage of braid is the way it slices thru deep water, again a saltwater advantage (Gulf of America deep) but still an advantage of the line type. I can see a use for it for deep water spoon fishing on TVA lakes.. I found threadline tied knots easier than a proper 2 pound mono.. go figure. I safely assume braid (coated) lives much longer in saltwater exposure and endures UV damage better. Chemical damage just isn’t limited to saltwater either our freshwater is rather affected by chemical pollution also. I ultimately chose FC w a FC coated mono as the best line for my water and structure type. Fully prepared to change line as needed.(also a good time to oil spool bearings if you haven’t already) My son was a big proponent of braid & nowadays has removed it & went back to a softer fluorocarbon line.. different strokes, different folks. Enjoy either line type. BTW, In 1971, my cane pole was rigged with Dacron and mono (yep a mono leader line) and back then I much preferred Dacron. 🙂

I think the engineering is cool. My son uses 1 Curado DC and he swears by it. I don’t own one and likely won’t ever. Still cool..

No spinnerbait for me in Winter, instead a rattle-trap then football jig and under-spins.. of course having a jerkbait rigged up is advisable. On sunny cold days as the sun climbs high the fish will lift up to a shallower depth, not because the water is warmer but because fish will directly absorb the diffused sunlight energy. That’s when either the underspin comes in or even the jerkbait. I guess even a ball head minnow bait would work.There are much better options during this time in my experience. Spinnerbaits are 3 season baits for me just not Wintertime.

For 3/8 double willow I use 12 YH line. Bigger weights I go up to 20..

You get an Alloy main gear, unless you order the JDM 1000HD Zillion with a brass main gear and Stainless pinion. Plus it’s Mag Z boost. I think that even the 21 Zil or 22 (non HD model) alloy gear model comes with a stainless pinion but I’m gonna call backup on that. @bulldog1935 USDM Zillion G SV already comes with brass hyperdrive digigear w stainless pinion and warranty, made in Thailand There is no HD “black” 1000HD per se.. available in the USDM. @FLYING HIGH

Less unusual but still, my wife & I were live bait fishing the St.Johns, Wild shiner fishing, I had released a 3 pound fish (wife caught) when 30 feet away from my balloon/shiner a seagull dive bombed the water. I watched it swim underwater, approaching my shiner, grabbing it and then attempting to fly away, but the quantum spinning reel with bait sensor began to peel off line in a controlled manner and I grabbed the rod and I’m cranking this seagull in but he won’t let go, at 5feet away the wife grabs the rod (at my behest) and I jerk a Buck knife out and I’m slashing at this bird who’s trying to steal my bait. She's laughing 🤣 and I’m slashing… I never fought a seagull before & finally it let go.. it got the shiner, She got a belly laugh and I got a memory that still cracks me up to this day 🤣🤣🤣
