good topwater day

I love them so much that I'm fishing topwater 80% of the time. I will happily catch fewer fish to catch them up top. I was catching them topwater when the water was still cold. And I catch them topwater some mornings when the Sun is blazing. This morning, the Sun killed the topwater bite, but it often doesn't.

Today I caught my first 8" hudd fish... after over 100 hours fishing it over the years. I've caught fish on bigger baits but for some reason I could never get them on the traditional slow bottom crawl

Stuck in low pressure la-la land today, the day after a storm system came through and dumped a bunch of rain on us. Some sun and some clouds, a WNW wind at 10 mph, and a little high and stained water. Caught my first bass on the second cast, and then a second one a few minutes later. Once I got past the threat of the potential “ @ol'crickety curse,” I was able to settle in and just fish without worry ?

Ended the afternoon with 21 bass, all on finesse jig and trailer. Most were out a little deeper and off the bank, and while bites were aggressive at times, the fish showed very little sign they were in any mood to chase. Best fish of the day had a pretty sizable mouth, but not the body to match. Might have been an old fish past his prime, kinda’ like me ?

Last pic is just one of those random shots the phone decides to take on its own every now and then, usually when getting taken out, or put back into my pocket :dontknow:

You caught the Hunchback of Notre Dame! Note the Cro-Magnon brow ridge too.

Is my curse catching just one bass? If so, I agree.

Yeah, when you asked if I only ever catch just one bass, or blank, and I replied both happen, but very rarely. That’s a sure setup for either or both to happen to me soon ?

I have two updates. Tuesday, I went fishing with a friend from church. I caught a boatload of rock bass, several smallmouth, and way more chub than I wanted to deal with. (stupid, grunting, slimy, useless little creatures.) I only got picture of two because we were wading in the river and it's hard to manage fish, pole, and phone at the same time without dropping one or all of them in the river:

My buddy couldn't land a single fish.

Then today I had an hour to fish, so I went pond hopping. First pond I couldn't catch any fish, but I didn't get skunked:

20230810-201357.jpg

Note the indignant look on his face as if it's my fault he can't tell a white plastic lure from real food. I flew him like a kite until he gave up and let me catch him. He'd hooked himself pretty good, and wouldn't open his beak to let me help him, but I finally managed to get the hooks out of his mouth with minimal blood

Then I went to the other pond. I thought I was gonna get skunked, but right before I had to go, I hooked a nice 15 inch bass. SOME people here, don't believe me when I take pictures with the measurements, so you just get to guess if I'm telling the truth by looking at the picture:

20230810-204748.jpg

And then on my last cast of the day, I hooked an actual whale. It was a horrible, exhausting fight (think Old Man And The Sea meets Biblical Jonah) but I finally landed her. Just look at that beast:

Streak day 66. Was raining, a lot, but got out for a few to get my fish of the day, got on a blazin worm. Man even with the rain, the temp was 85F.

Well I blanked a few times since the last big girl I posted here. Got on some today.

Started the day looking at the east side of the lake but it was chop city. Went west which was a much more pleasant place to cast, but lacked in the fish. Went back east and found a big school of sandies off the pier. Lost a nice spotted bass at the bank. Oof. The sandies went off deep and so I started scouting a bite on the other side of the pier. Made a very similar cast that caught the 7-5 earlier this week, and hooked into a PB flathead. 13lb 5oz. Inhaled the exact same lipless as the big bass. I gave the catfish to a very nice family that was out fishing for a fry and kept fishing. Caught the tiny spotted bass. Then snapped the lure off on a rock. RIP PB machine. You will be replaced immediately. Then I forgot to dig out the snag in my spool and snapped off my other 3/4oz red eye shad on its first ever cast. What a roller coaster. I'm gonna take a shot, wait an hour, and then go to bass pro. Lol

Shot of what?

Don't take a shot of anything stronger that iced tea and go to BPS with a credit card! Not a good mixture! You might leave there with a new boat!

Took my nephew fishing yesterday,  we’d been getting pounded with rain the previous night and early that morning.  But I figured it’d be fun to get him outside.

Of course we didn’t do great, only a few dinks but we fun.

Fished 9hrs, put these four in the boat, lost a small muskie "low 30's", had a high 40's miss the bait twice in the 8 before it left, and had another four follows. Both LM absolutely smashed that bucktail. Taking the wife in the wee hours tomorrow morning. Hopefully we can get her a big slimer.

The Wire Reaction GIF

I took a day off work today.  I was considering going to a different lake but instead went to the other end of the lake I normally fish.   I usually fish up the lake, but went to a different landing, then went down to the dam to start fishing.   I fish that end some during the Winter but the big end of the lake get's full of wake boats ect on weekends and it's like the ocean.  I pulled up to a long tapering point that ends at a channel swing.  I lost the tail on a t-rigged trick worm several times.   I switched from a trick worm to a D-bomb and caught a couple TINY spotted bass.   I normally always take a picture of the first bass I catch but these were less than 8 inches.   I moved to another point across the channel, and switched to a jig.   I caught another tiny spot.   If I'm catching 12 inch spots I'll usually keep doing what I'm doing but these were tiny.  I decided to try something else.    I had no luck on ledges or humps with cranks and bladed jigs.   I didn't see much activity shallow on sonar but decided to try a wacky rigged bizz baits "sassy stick".   I managed to pull a fat 28 inch long 9.82 pound Blue Catfish from under a dock.   It was on spinning gear with 8 pound test mono.  9.82 pounds isn't big for a blue but I'm always happy to land something that weighs more than my line test number.   I caught a 16 inch Largemouth that was colored like a spot a bit later and decided I had sweated enough.  I suppose a wacky stick worm on spinning gear is finesse fishing, but at least I haven't stooped to a drop shot yet.  (LOL)

Good lord.  I bet that was an interesting encounter.  Probably lucky to have landed that kitty with all those sharp edges down there using thin mono.

When I set the hook it ran out from under the dock and headed for deep water.   I moved the boat quickly to keep it from getting under it.   A flathead of channel cat would have probably dug in under the dock.

Busy all day, so went out about 45 minutes before dark and stayed about half hour after. Slight frontal line had moved through midday, and skies had mostly cleared. Ended the evening with 11 bass, all on Ned and one hybrid gill with the fattest belly I’ve seen. Not sure if  she was a late spawner or had eaten a plastic worm or two it couldn’t digest. The bass were pretty healthy also.

I got to the lake today about 5:15 but stayed at the landing for a while.  The fog was terrible.  A club tournament was having blast off at 5:30.  It was strange watching a bunch of 70+ mph boats idle away.  I didn't launch my boat until daylight.  It was still really foggy.   Fog picture was taken around Sunrise.   I managed to catch 5 before the fog burned off and the wake boats took over.  The 2 biggest ones were a double.  A 17 inch Largemouth and a 16 inch Spot.  The Largemouth hit a DT6 as I drug in through a lay down.  It done it's Largemouth job and walking on it's tail.  I had it at the boat and was deciding whether to net it or lip it (remember the treble from the same lure in my finger a couple weeks ago) when the Spot came up and smashed the lure.   (My net is 25" by 26").   The micro bass was on a wacky worm,  first bass was on a buzz bait, the other was on a XD3.
