Snaps - How many folks use them?

Featured Replies

I'll usually use some kind of quick snap on my crankbaits - Normal Speed Clips usually but also Tactical Angler Power Clips (these are a big large for my taste unless it's with a large bait) and Gamakatsu G-Finesse Tournament Snaps.

I use whatever comes on the lure . Snaps make it  easy to change lures but I dont retie often enough anyway .  If I'm changing lures its usually past  time to check the line and retie .

I'm assuming you mean snap swivels? I use them most of the time in most situations, but I'm starting to move away from them as everywhere I fish is overgrown with weeds and snap swivels do seem to catch a bit more pond weeds. Treble hooks on hardbaits have a tendency to snag swivels now and then. Reeling in the moment a hardbait hits seems to help mitigate this issue.

No, not snap swivels.  Snaps.

I always use a snap on cranks, jerkbaits, poppers, spooks and spybaits. I guess just about any hard bait come to think of it...

I use them, but only with certain baits or until I find the color they like that hr lol. I've talked to a cpl pros about them, and one example has stuck with me. While fishing a lipless in a school of fish he would catch a cpl and the fish would shut down, he would throw on another color and first cast with a new color he was hooked up. He repeated this with 3 colors and then went from a 1/2oz bait to a 1/4oz. It enabled him to catch many more fish, if he would of stopped to retie every time the school would of most likely calmed down too much and not continued to bite the other baits. The whole changing colors is a great way to keep em biting, works great w hardbaits and plastics.

Check Berkleys cross lock snaps, A bit to get used to, but the strongest Ive ever used. Some eyes will give ya a hard time, but nothing some needle nosed pliers cant carefully irradicate.

I use them on spooks and some crankbaits, Warts and deep little N's. I think it helps the action some. But it's not a speed thing, I can tie a knot as fast as I can open and shut a snap.

Could someone please pose a pic or link of what they use.

This is the other one that some of use, connected with a palomar knot as well. It does take a bit of dexterity to connect as mentioned earlier, but holds very well. I had been told somewhere that they are rated at 30lb, but I didn't see that on the TW info.

I use both the speed clips and p-line technical snaps. Both work well with the technical snap easier to use.

I don't remove slip rings from my baits, haven't seen any need to.

I have seen this style fail often. The only way to trust them is to crimp the metal sleeve down over the wire to prevent it from accidental opening which defeats the purpose of quick changes with baits.

I only use them on my crankbait rod.  I use the VMC duolock snaps.

X2

Tried them and hated them. Took longer to change lures for me, especially if eye is set into bill.

I just change all of my line tie split rings to an oval one. I can retie much faster and easier, even with flourocarbon.

i rarely use snaps but when i'm using a wire leader i don't really have a choice i have to fish them sometimes because of the pike

I use them on any type of crank/jerk with a split ring.  I've seen line get wedged in between the coils of a split ring when tied directly.  That's a lost fish waiting to happen.  I use inexpensive Eagle Claw dual lock snaps in size 1 or 2.  Despite what some may think of Eagle Claw, these are very strong.  Can't think of any issues of failure/breakage off the top of my head.

I use the tactical anglers power clip.  As others have already said ... I also remove the split ring which comes with the cranks.   The smallest they sell works for all bass applications.   I use the larger ones on my striper setups with no issues.
