Top water Lures on Mono

Featured Replies

When using Mono for top water lures, what weight do you recommend?

For years, 17# Trilene worked fine.  You wouldn't go wrong with that.  Now I use 30# Supercast from Tuf-Line.  Acts like mono on the reel, floats, and is zero stretch.

I use 12 lb Big Game for decades for both top water and crankbait lures to 3/4 oz. Big top water, wake and swimbait lures I use 25 lb  (.016D)  Armillo Nylon.

Frogs in heavy cover 60 lb FINS braid.

J Francho and WRB,

Thank you both for your information. I appreciate, you taking the time to answer my question. Hope both of you have a fantastic day.

I used 12 forever, now mostly use 15.

Just a note, I personally go heavier because of all the strikes I'm likely to get from pickerel and northerns.  The added diameter is a bit of insurance for bite offs.  12 is plenty for LMB.

12-15lb big game here. Sometimes the redfish will hit a frog or buzz bait

It depends on the size of the topwater bait.  10# big game for 1/4 ounce and below.  15# big game for anything over 3/8 ounce.

As of right now.....12lb CXX for me but as stated above Big Game is pretty awesome for topwater.  Overall it's cheap and tough.

Thank you for all of your replies. The ponds that I fish have only bass and bluegills.

Usually 12lb Sufix elite camo mono..Just started using this line, really like it so far.

Use Sunline Super Natural for my topwater and jerkbaits.

12lb Yo-Zuri hybrid. It's the perfect "in-between" mono and flouro.

Sunline defier in 19lb, which I believe is more of a 14lb ish diameter in the traditional trillene/ stren types.

Hammer 4, tander, BigAngus752 and keeper,

Thank you, for all of your replies. To start, I'm going to tie mono onto my braid.  I'll see how this works and then try something else.
