What is the most versatile lb line?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I have a question about line: I have a baitcasting setup that I want to use for everything. What type and pound line should I use? I will be using it for weightless and weighted Texas rigs, jigs, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and some light topwaters. I appreciate your help in advance. Thanks and tight lines!

14# mono.

I am a fan of AN40.  Also use a lot of Siege.  12# is my standard for MH rods.  Comes down to personal preference.  Lots of good lines.  I am trying XXX and Mean Green.  Like both so far.

Your going to get endless answers here that will be based on personal preferences. Everyone has a different opinion.

I don't necessarily pick line for pound rating . More often I choose by line diameter. Every brand and style has a little different diameter of line.  They also rate line pound test differently.

For the most versatile all around line for a baitcaster I would choose a .013 to .014 inch diameter mono or copoly. Depending on brand and line type that will range from 10 pound test to 15 pound test.

12 or 15 lb copoly

I rarely throw over 10# test for bass.

My 2 cents I don’t like baitcasters so I can’t comment there but I like 12# copoly

I fished with 14lb mono on every baitcasters for 10 years and 8lb mono on my spinning reels even today.  Oops, I forgot 20lb mono for frogs.
