line size for finesse shakyhead fishing?

Featured Replies

I use 6# and 8# for regular shakyheads. Thinking about throwing more 5# and 4#. What lb. test do you throw for for smaller shakyheads?

Depends on what you consider smaller. 1/8oz and under go on 6#FC...that's as light I as I go for bass.

I use 6# Tatsu most often

5 lb Maxima Ultra Green copolymer.

7 lb Sunline Sniper FC.

1/8 oz and under I use 8 lb FC leader and 10 lb FC leader over 1/8 oz up to 5/16. Shakyheads heavier(up to 1/2 oz) than that gets straight 15 lb FC.

I don't go less than 6 lb anymore.  I used to fish with 4 lb but I had a lot of break offs in the thick vegetation.

1/8 oz is my main weight.  I use 12 to 15# fluorocarbon because of the trees and rocks where I fish.

3/32nd oz ~ 3/16th oz. shaky heads I fish on #10 lb. or #15 lb. PP Braid (Hi - Viz Yellow) +either #7 lb. Sunline FC or #8 lb. Seaguar FC leaders ... Depends on which spinning set up I am using at the time for the shaky head .

10 lb fluorocarbon for 1/8-3/16 oz jigs with 5-7 inch worms, but drop down to 7 lb Sniper when fishing 1/8 oz 4-5 inch worms.

Depends where your fishing and the SH itself.  Some SHs have their line ties at the bottom of the head, which makes the knot susceptible to damage, especially around rocks and concrete.  Normally I use 6-10lb Red Label or AbrazX as a leader with braid, but when Im fishing rocks or concrete pilings with a low line tie I'll use good leader material like Blue Label.

8lb pp braid with a 5lb maxima ultragreen leader for me.

*Looks like Ned Rig set up territory ... I suppose it could be done , but not sure I would want to use #8 lb. braid + 5 lb. Maxima (great lines !) to try to drive a buried  jig head hook (3/0 ~ 4/0) through a plastic worm and into a bases mouth .

10lb braid to 10lb FC leader

I use Picasso Tungsten Takedown shakyheads with the 2/0 hook (seems more like a 1/0) and 4.5 inch roboworm or similar worms primarily with that line setup for my shakyhead fishing, drives the hook home perfectly fine.

But yes it will not work as well with the larger 6+ inch worms and larger hooks, I should have clarified that I'm more of a finesse shakyhead fisherman instead of the standard 6 inch trick worm or fat roboworm type that is more rampant.

With the typical shakyhead setup, I would use 10lb PP and 8 lb UG, it works well at Clearlake.

15 lb.braid to 6lb. leader.
