If I was to throw a fire red crankbait or maybe even a red chatterbait like the fire craw jackhammer (in a pond with no crawfish) in Early Spring would I still catch bass? Would they pay any attention to red lures?

My experience is yes!  I've done better with red shad colored worms and black and red jigs...

I haven't done well with red baits in ponds, but I have done well with a hint of red. Like a red hook, for example. Something like a red lipless doesn't do well for me though.

Sure Red works anywhere...and I'd bet your pond has craws even if you haven't seen them. Ill be the first to admit that I haven't done great with red but have caught some on it...gold black back however has killed them for me when red is "the deal".

That said I am gonna try some red\orange baits this year besides traps...mostly square bills and bladed jigs. Maybe tie up a spinnerbait with a spring craw skirt.

Anything red just doesn't work here, ask as friend 20 miles away and it's "red hot"! Don't mean to pull any puns with you but red, IMHO, is in the eyes of the beholder.

Impossible to know what bass in your pond think of them until you try.

red is a color for low angle sunlight, early morning, and late afternoon.  

The deeper you fish, the later in the morning and the earlier in the afternoon you can get by with red.

I was nailing them in my pond last week on a red trout magnet the Crappie and Bass loved it ? Water was slightly stained.

I have had great luck with Zoom trick worms...texas style. Color: Red with Black core.

I've done well with red lipless baits in ponds. Seems to depend on the pond though. It works great in some and I flail the water with it in others.

It is certainly been a struggle for me with reds. Does it work yes, but I could never catch on with it. Between my shoulder blades is the biggest problem with red. Basically have tuned that color out. Most likely have hurt myself over the years by not using it more often. Should have tried to build more confidence in it. I have a couple of cranks that have red in them that work in tidal but I don’t fish tidal all season long. They have not produced on my home lake. It’s not the lure, it’s me. I’m pretty certain of that. 

The only red lure I have had success with is the Red Eye Shad.

If you can’t catch a fish with a red/red Shad 4” or 7” Power Worm (in my case) it’s not in the cards for the color of red for you in your bag of tricks (in my case). 
 

I’m anal, bullheaded, and sort of wrote that color off a long time ago. I don’t want to invest much time in it too much these days. 
 

A couple of CB’s that have some  red in them and worms, tubes and creatures that have red flecks in them is gonna have to be ok for now. 
 

It is very popular, guys have great results, I just can’t buy much with it.  

It doesn't work well in most of the waters near me.  However, there's a lot of iron in these waters, so the water itself is usually pretty stained with a red color.  So red lures blend in more than stand out.  

 

I wish they'd make a rusty red colored braid.  That would do well in my area.  But I can see why they don't.  There's not a lot of red lakes out there.
