Chattertube?

Featured Replies

Recently have seen a bunch of videos regarding this "bait modification", a tube that is used as a naked trailer on a chatterbait (no skirt).

Any thoughts?

I'll try to remember to try that Monday. Not that I'll catch anything on it in 38-40 degree water but you have me curious. I have a couple bulk bags of hard bodied double dipped flippin tubes that should work well for this.

Can you link one or two of these video's?

Meh.  We used to do this with spinnerbaits decades ago with limited results.  Seemed like a good idea at the time, but never really produced that well, and so it fell off the radar.

I'm sure some folks will manage to catch a few with them, but this too shall pass.

I put a tube jig on a weedless casting jig head once and thought I was about to set the world on fire. Pretty sure that experiment ended the same day it started. Looked great on paper, but it wasn't very functional. Seems like there's lots of easier ways to get a smaller profile on a bladed jig than with a tube.

I'm all for new techniques etc. But this is just trying way too hard just to be "innovative" IMO.

Try salmon eggs on your jerkbait hooks.

Don’t tempt me lol, that’d probably catch some steelhead and salmon over here on Lake Michigan.

Yeah, when I've tried to use a spinnerbait without a skirt, it has not produced that well. Before I tried it, I thought I was really on to something.

Totally unrelated but thank you for your johnson silver minnow video! After seeing the spoon move in the water with a skirt, I absolutely have to try using one and your tips were very helpful.

A friend of mine that pours custom heads gave me a few to try a couple of years ago. Meh. The entire head is covered by the tube, so the blade doesn't bang off the lead. So, it's kinda like a silent bladed jig, (which is ok) looks like a tube on a scrounger head.

I put a 4" flippin tube on a CB today and made a few casts. I gotta agree with Glenn. Meh. Lots of better options. Sounded like it might be good, but looking at it in action was less than impressive.

The humor in a post asking about videos and tubes will go over most folks' heads, oh, and why do all these folks think these are "secrets"?...

Maybe a bit gimmicky and probably not something I'll try, but it makes far more sense as a chatterbait trailer than a spinnerbait.  At least with the head shake of the chatterbait you'll get some action out of the legs...

I saw the Blaukat video. Randy loves to tinker his way off the leaderboard.

I tried it, got me thinking and was bored. Had a bunch of unused Original Chatterbaits and a few Academy brand. Seemed like a great idea. I'm for presenting lures that the bass have never seen, since I fish 4 or 5 ponds that get pressure. I hate there's a bunch of negative talk about it. Oh well, I'm still going to try it. Nothing to lose. I ended up using a lighter to mend the cut he instructed to insert the piece of trick worm.
