i use a silicon tube to wacky my senkos.  i dont use the clamp, but just thread the worm on.  as it slides on, it plows the salt up and really dulls and lightens the worm.  bass kill it.  when i tex rig them, i try to rub them, but my soft office worker fingers dont do the same job.

 

my zoom worms, i rub  to get the grit up.   am i wasting my time?

I’ve never heard of this being done on purpose.

Im probably missing something here. I always felt like  a shiny sheen on plastic baits was part of the attraction.

I never heard of it before but if you think it's creating more bites, continue doing it.

 

The only possible downfall would be, by rubbing and kneading your Senko's of their salt, your creating more buoyancy which won't really matter if you're using a wacky jig.

 

Zman Elaztech is famous for this.

It'll outlast it's salt then floats, perhaps not an issue with Yam.

Yes, I find the inside of a fish's mouth works great.

Nope. I fish baits straight from the package with no mods. I don't have time to fuss.

you dont even trim them down for jigs and stuff?

Nope, no point in it.  Mike Siebert makes them perfectly.  Buy quality baits, and trimming isn't necessary.

I have never done that to my soft plastics. Pretty much get fished the way they come out of the bag. 
 

I would not question what you are doing. Keep doing it if you think it is helping. 
 

I myself have been know to hang some crankbaits for a period of time on a tree branch, truck rear view mirror or the shed door latch to get them to fade slightly. Bluegill patterns for the most part. Call me crazy but I like a faded lighter version of a bluegill. 

I spit on them to make them shinier.
