last weekend, i was fishing the opposite of "clean".  wind and currents had me busy and i tossed more times into trees, branches, rocks, shore..  it was humiliating.  my kayak was like a loose bull in the boat wakes, wind and currents.  i had 4 tiny tungsten worm weights when i launched and by the time i was done, that went to zero.  hahah.  one i dropped and it "swished" into a scupper hole in a 1:100 chance.  nothing but net. 

 

i noted a few 1/16 split shots bouncing around my box and i clipped them in front of my texas rig worm, and got to CATCHING!  it worked and was still relatively snag free like a pointing worm sinker.  i pinched it about 4 inches in front of my hook.  

 

fun and cheap.  jus sayin.

i am in agreement.  but there really is more than one way to skin a cat.

I still use split shot too, sometimes I just want a little bit of weight. Can’t beat’em.

I took an older gentleman out last fall on a morning that ended up being a tough bite.

 

My $$$ of tungsten weights and varying baits were humbled by his power worms and water gremlin split shots.  Clinched right above the hook, nothing fancy about it.

Split shot above a small finesse worm will get you bit. My buddy caught  a 9 lb that he has on his wall with a Zebco 33, split shot rig with a "do-nothing" worm, the kind with the 2 open hooks. That was the 90s. All these years and dollars later, he has yet to improve on that PB.

Agree on the split shot but I hate crimping my fluorocarbon. So I just use tungsten beads and 2 bobber stops. Makes it easy to adjust the "leader length" if needed. Use 2 between the bobber stops with a little space and you have a rattle.

I use split shots for wacky rigged worms. I just pinch it on when I need it just above the hook and remove it when I don't.  I don't put it on too tight but just enough so it stays.

From WRB. If you've got soft lead round shot, crimp it on the end of your line, then slide it back and forth up and down the line about 10".  This creates a small groove in the shot. Next, clip off that 10" section and crimp your shot where you need it.                     The small groove in the shot won't damage your line. A split shot rig inched along, can be deadly.

Put a bobber stopper on either side of the sinker (or just one if you aren't pegging) and you will get back 99% of your sinkers when you break off, not to mention it keeps the sinker from squishing down the bait.

I forgot about that tip .

I use split shots often. I've even used tiny ones as bobber stoppers in a pinch.

 

I find it convenient, especially if I'm being lazy, I can go from weightless to weighted, change the size, slide it up the line. And I've never had one damage my line that I'm aware of. They don't need to be very tight. I can make one into a slider with a tiny bit of work too.

I use a small split shot if I want to turn a texas rig into a carolina rig.  It might not be the way it's supposed to work but it works for me.   I don't know what a bobber stop is, and I don't have any tungsten weights.   

I prefer the Water Gremlin bullet split shots. They are great around and through grass.

If you knew how many times WG's been cited here for illegally dumping waste, and violating OSHA health and safety standards....you'd be like me and avoid them at all costs.

 

This despite the fact that I normally try to buy from MN businesses - WG is one of the exceptions.

I’ve not heard of this until now. I’ve been using the bull shots for years and really like that they don’t hang up as much as round ones.Thanks for the information.

I havent used anything but split shot this year.

Ebay for old stock of splitshot. The damage has already been done with those products and idk if its just me but the lead appears to be softer than what you can get on the shelves now.

To me, even buying old is 'support' for their product...so I refuse to have any WG product in my boxes.

thanks.  I'll add those to the arsenal.  

For something as small as 1/16oz, I don't think you're getting much bang for your buck buying tungsten over a lead bullet weight anyways. 

 

 

Typical split shot rig using #5 and #7 size split shots the most about 18" up the line , small #1 or 1/0 hook and a Robo Worm is pretty lethal to drag around .
