Man befriends Smallmouth Bass on a dive. The two are inseparable.

Featured Replies

This man encountered a Smallmouth Bass on a dive and they became friends. The SMB is jealous and chases other fish away from him. The fish lets the man pet him, and on the TikTok page @elvisthesmallmouth he hand feeds him. This man taught Elvis how to locate him by sound. The fish has a distinct marking and so the man always knows it's Elvis. This is insane.

I saw that video the other day. Pretty awesome to watch.

I'm calling the police

So all I need to do to catch my next PB is go under cover, I mean underwater, and befriend a big fat lonely bass and wiggle my fingers to get it to bite and grab it by the face?

But really, this says a lot about bass behavior and intellect, fascinating. I saw another video that didn't make it on DODO a while back, I think it was youtube channel the Nature of Fishing, where the same thing happened.

Yeah, I don't subscribe to the "fish are dumb" narrative. Instinctual, yes; dumb, no. I've seen too many cases of fish training and conditioning.

Notice the hook holes in it's mouth.

He mentions it has been caught before and the unique mark it left is how he knows it's the same fish each time he dives.

Looks like spawning behavior to me.  Bass is just a little confused.?

For real, it does resemble mating ritual. I keep pet rabbits and until they're fixed they will run circles around you to claim you, then pee on you to mark you, and then finally they will hump. The moment the fish started chasing others away I was like...does it....want to....breed?!?!

Cool video, thanks for sharing.

The south fork of the Shenandoah river is very popular for kayaking.

On Sunday after church a bunch of us go and stop at the same place and swim.

Whenever you walk around the Smallmouth swarm your feet for all the critters you kick up.

I’ve swam with smallies many times, they are quite friendly

Lol if you were snack size they wouldn't be so friendly me thinks. Imagine if bass were shark size. Nobody would be safe in fresh water lmao

Bass would 100% eat humans if they were bigger.   They will eat anything as it is that fits in their mouths.   They are the Tiger Sharks of freshwater ?

I believe they think I’m a harmless manatee that eats too many snacks

Agree, king of freshwater fish and I've never seen one in person.

I accidentally caught one on one of the premier Muskie lakes in Illinois (not saying much honestly) during a bass tournament. I couldn't shake it off my squarebill fast enough. Toothy, stinky, slimy, freak of nature. I prefer the ones I can lip.?

I hear people talk that way about Pikes all the time, but you are one of the first that didn't enjoy them.

I used to get North American Fisherman as a kid, and loved reading about Muskies.  Always so alien for a kid from Alabama.

That is a cool story.  Smallmouth are so inquisitive.  It would be interesting to see how long they can “hang out”.
I would NOT want to hang out with a musky.   They are a different beast.  I came across a musky that was floating dead.   She had died trying to eat a 28” pike.

This video made me join TikTok so I could see how deep this relationship went. He's got about 50 videos of himself hanging out with this fish. No idea of the time period. They chill like best friends and it eats from his hands in the vids I've seen so far. It comes to him when called. Absolutely amazing stuff.
