Does anyone use a Flogger?

Featured Replies

This past year I noticed Pros using them in tournaments, and others using them on my home lake.  How effective are they and what is their range in water that is pretty clear?  I'm thinking that if I'm sitting over a school of fish and cannot get a bite, it would be interesting to know the species.

I'm kind of a traditionalist with my floggers

Never tried to use one to catch fish, though.

I've only ever seen them used up north on super clear SM fisheries during the spawn.

With the advancements on Aquavu underwater camera systems, not sure the need for a flogger is warranted anymore at least for the pros.

Gussy has been doing a lot of work this off season with the AquaVu system.  Will be interesting to see it in usage next season.

I've never seen on in use, other than by a biologist.  But our lakes are pretty stained, so it won't buy you much.

@galyonj They’re usually only used in angling when a fish comes unbuttoned or for fending off the bait monkey.

I would never use a flogger.  It’s cheating.   It takes the mystery out of fishing.  😆

i’ve seen pictures of floggers used a lot on lake St.clair when people are bed fishing for smallies.  I believe they are primarily used for bed fishing.  I try very hard to not bed fish so i don’t have a use for one but, to each their own

Did you get your FFS dialed in yet? 😂

No not really. 🤣

Just watched a little bit of a live tournament.

A dude was looking through a traffic cone and looked like the biggest fool I’ve ever seen.

Never seen one before.

I keep a flogger in my boat at all times, only used it once.  That one time it successfully located a $400 G. Loomis rod and $200 Daiwa reel that one of my friends knocked overboard.

learn something new EVERYDAY!!  I wish I would have been given the responsibility of naming that thing.

I've seen islanders using it to find baitfish..

I’ve never considered the need because most of the lakes I’ve fished aren’t clear enough to warrant it.  But I’ve got one now with 20’ visibility and I’m curious.  I also have an older aquavue that i put away a couple years ago that might make a reappearance.

Not only that, but it takes the fun out of fishing.

My issue in Florida is most places are either too stained or too shallow to use one.

And where I am casting to way out there, the flogger is of no use.

I can see where people fishing for $100,000.00 or more might use every trick and tool they can get away with, but for guys like me fishing for fun, this thing won't be in my boat. I am OK with tournament fishermen using this. Its not cheating to see your fish. The flogger does not make a fish bite an artificial lure. It only helps those using the lures to entice a bite. And that is what we all do, just some more dialed into it than others- like with forward facing sonar. It does not make a fish bite.

The fun is in fishing for fish. Not playing around with all the gizmo's and gadgets.

If this were such a big deal then why don't bass pro's and all of us run around in glass bottomed boats and be done with it. Silver Springs has been doing it since the 1870's. Way ahead of their time!

Heck we got guides here in Florida taking people fishing in clear kayaks so they can do the same.

I think I'll just stick with fishing for the fun of it. Leave some of that mystery in there.

My comments about using a flogger being cheating were made a year and a half ago when Randy B was making headlines saying FFS was cheating and took the mystery out of fishing.  The smiley face was added to hopefully indicate I was kidding.   A flogger would allow me to see maybe 3-4 feet in most of the waters I fish so I don’t use one.  If I thought it would help me catch fish I would own several of them.

I know where there’s probably 4-6 baitcasting combos.

8 foot of water tops.

Been in there almost a year though by now.

Interesting.

Ban FFS! -  Go team flogger 🤣

Try that in the deep south and a gator may take your flogger and your head.

They use them on the St Lawrence for bedding bass. Those in the know only use the black ones not the orange ones.

I recently saw a flogger in a video and learned of their existence. Interesting technology for sure.
